There's no one definite answer unfortunately and the best cage will depend on several things such as your geographic location, your budget, whether you are willing to do any DIY and also your hamster's personality.

If you're in Europe or the UK then Zooplus is a good place to look for a large cage at reasonable prices and popular ones that are recommended are the Alaska, the Alexander, the Barney and the Hamster Heaven. Personally, I feel that the quality of the build on the Hamster Heaven is superior to some of the cheaper cages on the market but many people find that the cheaper Alaska suits their needs just as well.

I think the hamster's personality does have a lot to do with it. My current hamster is in the hamster Heaven which looks great and is a good size however he has stated bar chewing so it doesn't appear to be making him happy as it seems he wants to get out
My last hamster lived in the Savic Bristol which is smaller than the Heaven but she loved it! She never chewed the bars and was just happy and content, however by nature she was calm and placid, and my new ham is more 'lively' (Crazy)
I think it is trial an error to a degree, although I appreciate that buying a cage that a hammy then hates is an expensive mistake as I'm now finding!

I think everyone has their own take on the best cage or style of cage so there isn’t one answer.
I guess the one thing most people will have in common is the size. That it should be no smaller rhan 80 x 50cm. After that everyone seems to favour different things. And some hamsters shit some types of cages better than others.

For me, I favour two (and believe me I’ve tried A LOT), the Alexander (100x59cm roughly) (available on zooplus if you’re in Europe) and the Zoozone 2 (100x50 roughly but living space is more like 97 x 40) (lots of pet shops/online shops sell it).
These two aren’t without their problems (side access on the Alexander mixed with it being a tall cage can make interacting with the hamster difficult. And the zoozone can be a problem if you’ve got a serious chewer) but over all these are the cages I favour and so I would say they’re the best but I’m sure there are lots who would disagree.

The best thing to do is consider as many different types of cages as possible and look at peoples reviews of them (how they look, how the hamsters in them do, how easy they are to clean etc) and go from there.

Best of luck.

It depends on your budget partly, but you can't really go wrong with an Alexander cage from Zooplus. I also think the Savic Hamster Plaza is an excellent cage but it's a bit taller and could work out a bit expensive to set up with extra shelves.

As Velma says, the Alaska, Barney and Alexander are all good Syrian cages. I personally think the Hamster Heaven can be a bit on the low side for large Syrian toys, and most of the plastic contents need removing as they don't really work.

I've never heard of a Syrian being unhappy in an Alexander cage! I have the Barney but it was a toss between that and the Alexander, and the Alexander was out of stock at the time. The Alexander costs a bit more but comes with plenty of houses and shelves and you just need a wheel. Whereas I bought an extra shelf or two for the Barney so it probably ended up costing the same.

Hamster Cages | great selection at zooplus
