Congrats on giving Jerry his loving, forever home with you and your girlfriend. I believe he will truly enjoy his new cage, wheel, and toys. Other members have done an excellent job at giving you wonderful suggestions so there's no need in me repeating them. Have fun with Jerry, and I look forward to getting to hear about his wonderful adventures and seeing pics of him when he settles in more. Btw, Eros waves her tiny paw and says hello from her cozy nest, lol.

Some more excellent advice thank you Serendipity!! I definitely like the idea of homemade toys/houses, he already has a couple of cardboard tubes that he likes to use!
Although he has his "bedroom" at the top, he likes to sleep under the platform. We decided to put tissue in for him to use and he loved it!! running around getting it all, and thats where he made his bed!

I originally used standard woodshavings, however after seeing that certain types can be dangerous I went out today and bought some aspen as I've read it's a good material for them to burrow in

Although it was a nightmare to find in shops! gonna look online because I want to get as much as I can for as cheap as I can

I know that it's good to put a sand bath in for them to use to clean and such, and that they often use it as the toilet too, so I'm gonna aim to put one in. I was thinking of getting normal children's sand as you can get a big bag for £5 and I've heard and read it's perfectly safe

I think some people do use children's play sand - just check it's sterilized

He sounds like a great little character. If you have a sand bath he may decide to use that as a potty anyway lol. So you might not need both.

Even if it says sterilized you'd still want to oven bake it yourself

However children's play sand is definitely a highly recommended choice,especially for those on a tighter budget!

Wood tends not to be the best for burrowing,for that you'd want some plain toilet roll(just the cheap kind that's unscented and falls apart easily in water)and a good paper type substrate.In this case Fitch would be the best option,not only for the extremely high quality but because it's very cost effective as long as you get either the 10kg or 20kg size.With wood substrate or any non-paper substrate for that matter there's a big risk of allergies(caused over time with constant exposure,hence why they won't be immediately seen in most cases).Fitch eliminates that allergy risk,along with the extra benefit of being more environmentally friendly.

Amityville has a point about the Aspen - it can be a bit dusty sometimes as well. It's quite safe unless your hammy is allergic (and he doesn't sound to be), but there are other options. You can mix 2 or 3 substrates, so if you did get some Fitch you can use a bit of both mixed in until all the aspen is gone. A lot of people use it without any problems but some hammies can become allergic to certain woods.
