Same play area for hamster and rats? (not at same time!!)
My Syrian hamster Axel currently has the walk-in closet as his play area. I know it sounds a bit odd but it's really just a long narrow room off a bedroom and has wooden floors and a window. Barring one or two things that are easily removed it's just hamster toys everywhere . I will however be getting rats in the next 2 months and would like to use the room as a play area for both the rats and Axel (obviously not at the same time ). I would like some advice from those who have both rats and hamsters on things to consider and if Axel will get stressed out by smelling rats. My thinking is to have some dedicated flat sheets that I can put down on the floor for him and also keep his stuff separate for when it's his turn. Any advice on making this work well and safely for both the rats and Axel would be appreciated

As long as you don't share toys and use a sheet as you mentioned(or something similar)it should be fine

Aww Ruby, I do love rats also! I think the dedicated flat sheets sound fine.

As the others have previously said, I believe it should be fine. Btw, congrats on your upcoming rats adoption. I just adore rats and dream of having a few one day. I look forward to hearing all about them when they are settled in.

Re: Same play area for hamster and rats? (not at same time!!)
That's good to hear! I have been a bit worried about Axel sharing a play area with the rats. He's a little sweetie but a total scaredy pants! I just don't want him to get all stressed out because he can smell them. Even with dedicated sheets and separate toys I imagine there will be smells and things from them, possibly some permanently set up rat toys. I'm not really worried about any diseases and such as I am getting the rats from a well known reputable breeder. I just want to make sure I can accommodate the needs of both. I don't imagine the rats will be too bothered by hamster smell after the first few days so it's really just Axel I'm concerned over.
