Re: Detolf for a Syrian?
The detolf is quite narrow, but nice and long. There are metal bars in the detolf one would be at the top and hopefully out of reach, but the other would be low, so could be chewed.
The low one would be under the substrate, so that may put the hamster off chewing.
The ends are wood so could be chewed too. But I have only heard of a few hamsters who have chewed the wood.

Re: Detolf for a Syrian?
I would be a bit worried about a detolf for a bar chewer possibly. As CMB says there are internal bars in the detolf. Having said that - was the cage she bar chewed in before too small? And she has had a break from bars by being in the Zoozone. The Living World Green eco habitat (on Zooplus) might be a good upgrade but it's a lot more expensive than a detolf.
If you're good with diy, some people have taken the bars out of the detolf and siliconed the glass together to make a tank. I'd find that too big a job.
But it might be worth a try. If she did chew at the bars in the detolf you could wind sisal string round them to cover them. Otherwise, the detolf is a good option for a Syrian. I personally don't think it's too narrow because the length allows for a lot of enrichment.
Upgrade from a Zoozone 2 is tricky otherwise, without bars. A lot of people get this - there aren't that many larger cages or tanks and aquariums cost a fortune. If you can find a used four foot fish tank that would be an excellent upgrade. I've never had any luck finding cheap ones on ebay but maybe depends where you live. They can be mucky and need a good clean out.

Re: Detolf for a Syrian?
I had a detolf for Poppy. She did chew quote a way through one of the wooden surfaces until I blocked her off. She did chew the bars a fair bit, but the noise was minimum and her teeth remained fine, the bars a a lot thicker than the bars on a standard cage too. The surface can get very cold through the winter as it's obviously made of glass so bare that in mind. As long as it's kept in a well ventilated room I would certainly recommend getting one. There is a chance your hamster may be overwhelmed by size of it so bare that in mind.
You can also buy backgrounds off Amazon (like you see in a fish tank) that look pretty fantastic : D

Re: Detolf for a Syrian?
Khali enjoyed a nibble or several on the bars of her old cage ( she had 2 "large" pets at home cages joines together by tubes. She has never bothered to chew the bars that i know of and she has only ever chewed around the hole in one end of the wood once. I put a bolt and washer through, put an inch thick piece of cardboard in front and the wheel in front of the cardboard. Problem solved. She has had the odd nibble at the carboard, but its too awkward from her to get to to chew through it

Re: Detolf for a Syrian?
Yes I've been having a think and after a trip to ikea I decided not too as she is getting on now and prefers to sleep even when I take her out for free range on our hall area so I think keeping her cage the same is best!
