Best odor controlling bedding for a stinky hamster in heat?
So I have obtained another hammy. (convinced my boyfriend lol) She went into heat a few days ago and OMG did she stink. My other Syrian doesn't smell anything like this when she goes into heat. I currently use Carefresh paper bedding and it controls the odor with my non stinking hammy but it doesn't seem to be working for the new one. I mean my whole house stinks. Is there a better bedding for controlling this odor? I heard that aspen works better than paper bedding. If this is the case, what brand should I buy? Also, Is there a safe spray I can use as well?

It isn't normal for a female to smell that bad that the whole house smells and it should only be there around one in 4 days so it is an idea the check her carefully for anything else amiss. Smells can come from urine infections and also with a pyometra (womb infection) You usually have a discharge with this but often a smell is the first sign. Is she drinking more? Is she bloated or lethargic. Wet tail also smells badly so check her underneath.
If in doubt a vet visit will be needed. I hope she is OK.

Re: Best odor controlling bedding for a stinky hamster in heat?
Everything seems normal with her. This started on the 2nd day we had her. (My house stinks because I have a VERY small house.) I knew that she was in heat because she did the trance thing. I cleaned her cage last night and everything smells normal now. I will keep an eye on her incase it is the disease you were talking about. But to me it seems like she just smells bad when she is in heat.
Does aspen bedding help more with the smell than the paper bedding does?

Re: Best odor controlling bedding for a stinky hamster in heat?
I'm in the UK so don't use aspen but we do use Megazorb which is similar to the Carefresh. In our experience certain colours do have a more pungent odour. Cinnamons are the worst and cinnamon based colours I have noticed. Maybe you are quite sensitive to the smell? Overcleaning can make them mark more so I would monitor this and see if the smell is only there when in heat and if it is the actual hamster who smells or the substrate because really it should only be her who gives of a smell.

I haven't had a female Syrian but have heard some have a stronger odour than others, and some people are more sensitive than others. I would suggest getting one of those little air purifiers that removes odours The ones that work aren't cheap, that's the only thing. I don't hink you'll get an effective one under £60.
This kind of thing - removes dust too!

As Souffle says though, important to rule out an infection. What kind of smell is it?

It's a strong musky smell. I cleaned her cage yesterday so I am going to pay attention to the smell this weekend when she goes back into heat. HOPEFULLY this is the issue and not something serious.

Avoid cleaning with any strong cleaner, you've only had her a few days and you've cleaned the cage, this can unsettle them. It could be down to her being nervous and in heat.
