Television in same room
The only place I can put my hamster cage is in the living room/ kitchen. The living room has a small fridge freezer in it and a television. I am often at home during the day with the television on. I keep it turned down low but I am still worried it is disturbing to my hamster. The fridge freezer clicks on and off and makes a humming noise and i worry this is annoying for my hamster.
Also I have to cook in the same room as there is no actual separate kitchen room and I worry about the noise and cooking fumes which I try to keep low but obvs there are still some.
The only place to put her cage is in front of the radiator but I keep that turned down very low so no or hardly any heat comes off it. the room has large South facing windows and can get very hot so I always have the blinds down when I go out in case there is a heatwave.
Every week there is a fire alarm test in the building which lasts about 20 seconds and is very loud. She sits up in her nest when it goes on but has been ok afterwards. Again nothing I can do about it. I do worry that the fire alarm goes off when I'm out because it can go on for up to an hour till it gets turned off. With my last hamster the fire alarm went off about 3 times and I got him out his cage put him into his carrying case and took him out with me. I put his carrying case in a thermal bag with a blanket on top because it was cold outside and took him into my car and put the heating on.
Can anyone tell me if they think my television and freezer will be distressing my hamster. I hope not because there is nowhere else for her to go.

Re: Television in same room
It's perfectly fine to have a television and fridge in the same room as your hamster. As long as the tv isn't ridiculously loud when being watched, your ham probably won't even notice it. Hamsters are hardy little critters, and a little bit of noise won't hurt. I wouldn't keep your ham on the radiator though. Even if it doesn't seem hot, there can be drafts and unevenly warm areas. Could you possibly purchase a cheap side table? This would be a much better choice of stand The cooking shouldn't be an issue either. Best wishes

Thanks. I feel reassured. The radiator is ok I think because it is turned off. The cage is too big to put on a table.

Re: Television in same room
If I'm honest, I wouldn't do either of those things. The smell of cooking might be overbaring for a hamster and TVs give off low frequency sound that I would worry about causing my hamster discomfort.
I was actually watching Game of Thrones on my laptop last night while Flower was running about the bedroom and I significantly noticed a change in her behaviour so I turned it off. But this is just my personal opinion.

Re: Television in same room
Unless the tv is turned up very loud, it shouldn't affect your hamster Mine never seem bothered when I'm playing a video or music.

Re: Television in same room
It's difficult because ideally I would not have her in the same room as a television, laptop, freezer or cooking but there's nowhere else for her cage to go. All I can do is keep noise etc low or maybe move house!

If you open a window or use a fan when you're cooking, it shouldn't affect her unless there's excessive steam or smoke. And I've never had a hamster been bothered by tv, laptops, or a fridge The only thing to worry about is the radiator but if it's turned down she'll be fine (had to do the same for a while), just try to move her cage somewhere else when the radiator needs to be turned on for winter.

Re: Television in same room
Music is quite tricky with hamsters,as some don't like it but others do.Even then, different hamsters have different preferences and some can even be quite surprising As an example I had a Syrian who loved music including Marilyn Manson, but this is one of several hamsters who have been found to actually be fond of music.

Re: Television in same room
My hamsters are in the lounge with my television. I live in a small one-bed flat and don't want them in the bedroom, so don't really have much choice (only other rooms being bathroom & kitchen, neither of which are suitable due to space, steam etc). I'm out at work all day anyway so only have the TV on for a few hours in the evening, and to be honest, I've never given any thought to it being detrimental to the hams in anyway, and I really don't see it a as a concern personally. I have the TV is one corner and the two hams are in two of the other corners, so not right near it anyway.

Re: Television in same room
Just to comment on music- studies have proven that music (especially classical) has a calming effect on rodents. I always have classical music playing at a low volume in my animal room
