Default Syrian Hamster Cage Recommendation

Hi everyone, just looking to see what cage is everyone recommending these days for a Syrian hamster please?

Looking to get my first hamster over the next few days, but want to set up everything before hand.

Also any recommendations on a decent wheel would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Cage would depend which country you're in, if you let us know then we can give some suggestions.

In the UK & US one of the best & most popular wheels is the silent runner (not silent spinner!).
More wheel ideas here.

There are some great cages on the market (bear in mind, I'm in Europe so if you're in the US or non Eu country, these may or may not be available)

My Syrian lives in the Alexander cage. It's 100cm by 50cm and can be bought on Zooplus. It's HUGE. Great size and great cage.
My only issue with it is the doors on the side are very small and a bit useless. There's a huge door in the top that is great but with the upper levels and height of the cage, it can be a bit tricky to interact with hamster. Other than that it's great.

There's also the Barney which is the same size as the Alexander just with fewer levels included in price.

Also on Zooplus there is the Savic hamster heaven and Alaska cage. These are a bit smaller at 80x50 and 84x47(roughly) but still a good size.

There are also a couple of tank type cages that would be nice too.

If you are a good diy-er you could look into modding the ikea detolf Shelf unit which makes a great cage.

A lot of people recommend bin cages but I never liked having them. That could just be personal preference though.

As for wheel I cannot recommend the Silent runner enough. I have both the 9 and 12 inch and they are completely silent. If you can I'd say go for that.

Thank you everyone. I'm not sure my posts don't seem to get through quickly. I am based in the UK.

Will have a look at zooplus. I think I will have space for just about 80cm cage.

Any recommendations regarding bedding as well please? Zooplus seem to have this hemp bedding, is it recommended?

Thanks

I'd aim for Fitch before hemp.Fitch is the best UK substrate choice, being dust free and not able to cause an allergic reaction like many other substrates. It's also fairly cost effective when bought in the 10kg or 20kg bale size,so it's definitely worth at least considering

Like the post above said, fitch seems to be great. I've never used it because I can't get it wheee I am but I've seen so many great reviews.

Carefresh is good too. That's what I use. Though it's a bit pricey.
Also I've heard lately concerns it contains too much dust but I'm not 100% sure.

Fitch is definitely the best bedding out there. It's soft, eco-friendly, and good at holding burrows. However, hemp is a wonderful bedding as well so it really just comes down to personal preference

As already mentioned the most popular are the barney, alaska & alexander on Zooplus, the hamster heaven is a bit on the small side for a syrian.
Hemp substrate is fine, I have used it on it's own but now mix it with fitch which is a really good paper based, virtually dust free substrate & hamster love it!
Fitch.
The 20kg bags are the most economical but with just one ham 10kg is probably more practical but still very economical.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, they have been really helpful in helping me decide. I did however, take a bit of a different route regarding the cage. I really like colourful products and ended up ordering the following cage.

Hamster Cage

I haven't ordered the silent runner yet, any recommendations please on where I can buy the wheel from please? I couldn't find it on Amazon or Zooplus either.

Haven't had a chance to open the cage yet, but will post my views soon.

Also thanks everyone for the bedding recommendations, for now I have gone with pure hemp bedding.
