Can Hamsters be kept in the dark during the day?
Hello! I haven't gotten a hamster yet so don't be to worried, but I am getting one soon, and I have a cage and the place I placed it is in a corner and it's very dark, is that okay? Should I invest in a battery powered light?(Don't want to increase the electric bill by keeping a light on all day) Should I move the cage to a naturally lit place? I'd also like to add I'm going to have lights on during parts of the night when I'm interacting with the hamster. Thanks!

Some would say no, but there are studies that show light really does affect a hamster's circadian rythym and overall health. If you can move your ham to a naturally lit place, that would be ideal. However, a lamp wouldn't hurt either. A lamp plugged in isn't going to add much at all to your electric bill yearly Best wishes

If you possibly can I would keep your cage in natural light, hamsters are sensitive to light levels & respond to the changes in day length throughout the year.

So agree with Drago and Cypher, when it's darker in the evenings, I use lower wattage bulbs, I hate really brigh lights myself.

Are there any areas in your home that have better natural lighting? Maybe you could opt to putting the hamster cage in a more naturally lit area (not in direct sunlight, though), and put the hamster supplies in the dark corner
