It's definitely suitable, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. I always recommend pairs be kept in cages within the 600-700 sq in range. Too small and they can grow equally as territorial as if it were too big. Some would disagree, but those are just my thoughts on it, as many people who have kept pairs in these size cages have had more success. I recommend a 40 gallon breeder for a pair. It's about 650 sq in, and is relatively inexpensive Whatever you end up choosing, please share some pics!

The only tips that I can offer would be to ensure you have two of everything, bottles, toys, hides, wheels, etc. Also ensure that the hides have two exits so one hamster can't corner the other. Scatter feeding is best as it gives each hamster a chance at food That's about all I can think of right now, but someone else may have more tips Good luck, share some pics of your setup when it's all ready!

Do you know the spacing on the bars? If it's over 1/4-1/2 of an inch then I'd probably mesh it just to be safe

You may just want to prepare to mesh it then. Never hurts to be over prepared!
