Wheel Size
Hi Folks,
So I upgraded from a 6.5" kaytee silent spinner wheel to the 12" yesterday as my Syrian is getting bigger and I was seeing her back start to arch a bit on the smaller one.
I attached it to the cage and when I looked an hour later I found her wedged between the spinner and the cage bars (she's in a Marchioro Goran Cage). So I freaked out she could get stuck there and die and took the bigger wheel out.
Just checking if others have hams that do this and it's safe? Or how you prevent them from doing that? Maybe this isn't the best wheel choice?
I'm really wanting to attach it to the cage if I can since it's sucha huge wheel - that way it takes up as little cage space as possible...
Thoughts?

Re: Wheel Size
Don’t know about the silent spinner, but the 12 inch silent runner can be attached to the cage bars.
Here is the wheel: Silent Runner 12 Inch
And the cage attachment: Cage Attachment for Silent Runner
I have the 12 inch silent runner attached to the bars, rather than free standing, primarily because I worry about it falling over on top of my ham if it were free standing. However, I want to stress that this is probably me beig paranoid. Many people have free standing wheels in their cages with no issues. Not sure about whether they could get wedged between the wheel and bars...
Having a big enough wheel is really essential. The silent runer is one of the best wheels out there, so buying one would be a brilliant investment.

Re: Wheel Size
AP gave you some good links, make sure to check them out
I wouldn't worry so much over your ham being jammed between the bars and wheel to be honest. Hamsters often do this in an attempt to shimmy up the cage to find their way out! If your hamster can get in there, he can get out as well. You can keep your silent spinner or check out the silent runner. Either way, it won't matter as long as whichever wheel you have is functioning well. I've always found the silent spinners to be trash and jam up after several months, which is why I always advise people to get the Wodent wheel sr, Trixie wheel, CSE, or the silent runner Best wishes

Re: Wheel Size
The 12" Silent Runner attached to the bars is great! I've used it like that for over a year and it's a safe and sturdy wheel. I would take the 12" Silent runner back and get a refund - they're huge (deep) and apparently don't spin that well any more since a manufacturing change. I love my silent runner attached to the bars, because you can have the wheel right up near the top of the cage (so the hamster can't climb on top of it) and have space for lots of substrate underneath it.
The Silent runner is 9cm deep as opposed to the silent runner which is 13cm deep so really bulky. The silent runner is actually silent as well And spins really well and is easy for them to run in.
