Is this wood substrate safe?
Hey so I'm currently using some kind of wood fiber as a bedding. I've only had it for as long as I've had my hamster - which is 3 weeks.
- I'm not sure if that shows a picture so I'm putting in a link just in case.

The package only says it's mixed wood shavings and I'm quite worried it's pine or cedar. I can't really tell the difference. I put in a picture so you guys can maybe tell me if it looks safe? I don't think he minds it, but I can't be sure. In the pet shop where I bought it they told me it's super safe and dust free, but that I could possibly be allergic to it, which I ended up not being.
If it's not safe, what are other inexpensive alternatives? I know that aspen is a thing but I have no idea what it is called in Dutch and if we have it here. Carefresh can only be ordered as far as I know and it's also quite expensive.. Anyway thanks a lot Any advice is also welcome.

Re: Is this wood substrate safe?
I definitely wouldn't take the risk with wood.Wood is a big risk no matter what kind it is,and there are definitely some good alternatives. In your case, the best option would probably be a high quality hemp substrate, which is the least likely to cause an allergic reaction(other than paper, which unfortunately isn't an option for you).

Re: Is this wood substrate safe?
I've had a similar problem and trust me you should not be taking any risk when it comes to wood shavings. You can try to contact the supplier or manufacturer to see what the shavings are made from. It's generally hard to tell because pine, cedar and aspen look the same the only difference is probably the smell of the shavings. However it might be tough to confirm it on your own so I highly suggest checking the packaging for any info and if not contact the people who made it. In the meantime, you might want to use another substrate just to be safe

Re: Is this wood substrate safe?
I don't know about where you are but in the UK wood shavings are kiln dried & safe to use, if it says kiln dried on the pack then it should be fine, if not then you can't really say for sure.
As far as I can figure out using an online translator which might not be right aspen is still aspen in Dutch!
I did have a look at Zooplus to see what they have in the Netherlands but they don't even seem to do hemp substrate which is a shame so it looks as though carefresh may be your best alternative if you don't want to trust the wood shavings.
