That is true,in regards to the most widely known US hamster forum. However, the size still isn't really proven to be big enough for Syrians(they still showed signs of boredom and such even with setups being different in many cases, thus showing it really isn't adequate and bigger than this size is still needed). The only two species it could potentially work for would be a Chinese or robo, and even then it would be a bare minimum and not necessarily what would allow for the hamster in question to thrive.

The minimum size recommended is 80x50cm, or 32x20in, with enough height for a suitable-sized wheel (28-31cm/11-12inch for Syrians, 20cm/8inch for dwarfs and Chinese). Many hamsters prefer cages 100x50cm (40x20in) or more, and in fact this is the minimum legally allowed in Germany.

As Jeir says, 80cm X 50cm (32 inches X 20 inches) is the minimum recommended size. That is actually equal to 640 square inches. There is nothing illegal about keeping a hamster in a smaller cage (assuming you don't live in Germany, apparently - didn't know that before!). But, if you want the best for your pet then that is the size you should provide

Maybe not legal requirement (pet shop owners are legally required to inform customers about the 100x50cm cage size, not that smaller cages are illegal to sell/buy), but this post by one of our German members explains it clearly. =)

Sorry, how big is your cage? I think you made a typo.

If it's a price problem, maybe you could get the Alaska from Zooplus. It's 84cm X 48.5cm X 44cm and only £32.99

Alaska Hamster Cage | Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!

That does sound like a good idea. Feels like we have the opposite situation in England where P@H seem to encourage you to buy a tiny cage!

Oh, you mean that your cage is 23 inches X 16 inches. So, it's 368 square inches. I see. Sorry, I didn't realise the * was meant to be a X sign. Well, that's a bit small if I'm honest, especially if you have a syrian. Take a look at the Alaska
