Default Wood shavings to Carefresh.

I'm changing my hammy's substrate from wood shavings to Carefresh for the simple fact, I've realised I have no idea what wood it is.. it doesn't actually say on the packing which is ridiculous!

The Carefresh (blue to match her cage accessories) is coming on Tuesday, now my question is, when I clean her cage and switch over to the Carefresh on Friday, do I do it gradually or all in one go?

Personally I would do it gradually. Taking away all of the substrate would be very stressful to her because you are wiping away most of her scent.

I would just do it all at once.In this case, you have no idea what wood you're using so there's a very big chance that the type of wood is unsafe to be using anyways. In other situations a gradual change would be better, but when a gradual change can be a safety risk the temporary stress is entirely worth it.

I agree with amity, it's best to remove it all at once. It could be pine, or worse yet, cedar and you definitely don't want that! Though it will remove all her scent and stress her, she'll still have her toys with familiar smells and her overall cage. After a few days or so, she'll be just as comfortable as she was before

If you're in the UK it's unlikely to be anything other than kiln dried pine which is safe so I would do it gradually, doing it all at once would be quite stressful, put carefresh in the bottom & some of the old substrate on top then you can gradually remove that when you do regular partial cleans.

Some conflicting advice there..

Ok, well, I was thinking of doing it all in one go too. I hate the wood shavings anyway even if it was Aspin. The only reason I haven't changed to Carefresh sooner was because I was waiting to get paid to get it.

She's a pretty laid back ham when it comes to changing things, she took the cage change all in her stride and was back to her normal self within half hour. I was going to wait till cage cleaning day to change it but I think I'll do it as soon as it comes back on Tuesday so as you said, all her smell will be on everything else.

I don't want to start another thread so I'll add this on:

I've got her safe sand and I've put it in her cage, she adores it. It's so funny. Can I leave it in there 24/7 or do I take it out?

It's got a rather strong scent when you first put it in. I'll link it and see if anyone knows.

That's definitely not safe, being a scented product with antibacterial(and likely unsafe)ingredients.Just remove it all as soon as the Carefresh comes,or to be even safer just remove it all now and replace it with lots of shredded toilet roll for now and then add Carefresh later.

The one I've got isn't antibacterial actually, but that's the closet I could find on the site. It's the same one only plain with bits of blue in it, the blue is just to make it look pretty apparently. And I didn't mean it's artificially scented, it smells like wood.

If it's from P@H & doesn't have anything added (antibacterial or scent) then it will be kiln dried pine & safe to use.
