As you're in South Wales, is Fitch not an option for you?

Hmm, I have to respectfully disagree with many of the points stated in the article you posted. Several of them were incorrect, and it seemed that the article was directed towards debunking the fact that softwoods cause liver disease however I did not read much about it talking about the effects it has on respiratory systems. It also seemed like it was directed towards rabbit owners rather than hamster owners. I have not heard of softwood shavings harming the liver however I do know that the phenols in pine and cedar bedding are not good for hamsters to be constantly breathing in, mainly because they have such delicate respiratory systems. Also, hamsters can very easily develop allergies to wood bedding. If the article was true I wonder why a lot of hamsters who were housed on pine or cedar bedding were sneezing and sometimes catching respiratory infections.

I don't mean to start a heated debate just sharing my opinion. In the end it is your hamster and you are the one who chooses how to take care of her. I mean no disrespect
