Default Cleaning cage ?

How often do you clean out your cages?

Berta is potty trained and wees in a potty that is filled with sand and tends to only poo in her house. I wash out her potty area every other day and clean out her house about twice a week so far. The other areas of the cage seem really clean. At the beginning I cleaned out totally once a week, leaving some of the bedding. Now, I am reluctant to because the sawdust in all the other areas of the cage seem clean and there is no smell.

I am interested to hear what others do and what you reccomend for me.

Thanks in advance

We clean out approximatly every two weeks with spot cleans of wee corner or potty as required. With young hammies we find they do not even need that much as they wee so little it often dries before you can scoop it out.
Hamsters don't actually like being cleaned out as they have spent a lot of time and effort getting things to their liking and the cage is scented like them and that is what they want. We always add a little of the old bedding back in after a clean to keep the scent and it helps them settle. I would just clean when you feel it needs it. As they get older they tend to wee a lot more so need more frequent attention.

syrians i always cleaned every fortnight but if I had to do three weeks it wasnt much different I found as I always washed out potty every second day and wheel once per week unless they were a pee while running type of hamster With my roborovski I could do once per month as they too potty train very well

Thanks for that She does seem really clean and very well potty trained. Maybe I just got lucky. I think two weeks seems a good benchmark

i clean every 2 weeks as well. A single dwarf can go 3 weeks though and not be very messy if they have to, although i wouldn't plan to leave them that long!

I clean the potties every day. Every one of mine currently uses a potty, but i have had ones in the past who refused and we had to clean their cage every week. Robos i find just pee in their wheels and poop in the potty. My pairs of dwarfs have two potties and it's surprising that they do actually use one to pee and one to bathe!
