Smile Re: Moving to a bigger cage

Oh, and the accessories I ordered arrived too! I ordered a sputnik house and a potty. For a giant Hamster it seems! 😂 That will teach me to read what the actual size is rather than just assuming it was like the ones I had seen in the shops!

Ooh lovely! The Sputnik is fine - they don't look as big once hung up The potty is large but I've seen other people use those for a hamster - it could be part potty, part sand bath - I'm sure she'll like it.

You could have the right hand shelf a little bit lower maybe, but see what it looks like when you've got the substrate in - it might not seem so high then. Some people use the ramp as a joining piece in front of the wheel, across the two shelves, and then use something else for access up to the shelves - eg a tube or bendy stick bridge thing. Up to you though. There are a lot of different ways to set it up. You could maybe have something over the wheel so she doesn't fall on it, but if she did she'd probably just slide down as the wheel seems fairly central between the shelves. Someone on here used the ramp and turned it into a sort of bridge that went over the top of the wheel and down at the sides to each shelf. It took a bit of diy though I think. You could just tie a tube to the bars above the wheel that goes from across to each shelf - if it's a big tube like a rat tube, it will block the top of the wheel and she'll more likely go through the tube than be able to climb the bars - if that makes sense.

Thanks Serendipity! Once the substrate was in it didn't look nearly so high! I've managed to re-use the long bridge we had in the old cage as a bridge over the wheel. It doesn't go all the way across but I've used a couple of those carrot chews that you screw onto the bars to support the other end and as a step leading up to it - it will do for the time being until we find a better platform! I've also swapped the sputnik for a smaller one as it seems to fit better.

We out her in to have a sniff round last night and she seems to love it, especially the wheel. She refused to come out of it so I put her house in from the old cage and left her to it!

The small sputniks are good hung over a shelf but in a cage as high as the Alexander you don't really want it somewhere your hammy can jump out of from a height

You could tie a tube or tubes to the roof as access to the Sputnik from a shelf etc.

Thanks Serendipity and CMB, I have it over the higher shelf near the corner by the ramp. She's had a sniff round it but not been in it yet so have hidden a raisin I'm it to see if that tempts her!
