Question Wheel on platform

I've drawn out an outline of what I want to do with Mushu's new cage... But the size of his silent Runner is rather inhibiting my plans for his new platforms as it takes up so much space. Must a wheel always be on the bottom level of the cage, or could I have it above a wooden platform?

I've seen a few cage set ups where a wheel is on a platform.
Can't say 100% but I'd say as long as the platform is completely level and sturdy and your hamster doesn't have a habit of flying out of their wheel it should be fine.

Thanks I was planning on making a little fence, possibly out of ice lolly sticks, around the edge of the platform anyway to prevent falls. And the platform won't be very high. We're talking 16-18cm high at the very most.

A fence would make the drop from the platform higher - when the hamster climbs over the fence and jumps/falls down from the top of the fence (perhaps it's just my hamsters who do this sort of thing...)

I've put wheels on platforms and the main issue is them moving around on the platform and making a noise. My Syrian hamsters seem to enjoy the extra noise and like to move the wheel so it also bashes into the side of the tank as they run. I've used duct tape to stick it to the platform (with care to ensure the tape is flat and minimum possible amount) though I appreciate some people may feel the risks of using duct tape where a hamster can access it is too much for their personal comfort. Which is how I feel about giving my hamsters free access to chew things made from lolly sticks glued together - I give them access under supervision in the playpen but not in their cages (personal choice and comfort level, not a judgement on anyone who does put such items in cages).

Vectis Thanks very much. So, you think it would be ok to have the wheel above the shelf? I also don’t think I will use a fence in that case. The platform will not be very high up so it is probably unncessary anyway.

I keep an eye on hamsters who have wheels in new positions in their cages just to make sure they aren't flying off it and hitting into things, regardless of if it's on a platform. If your cage has bars on the roof or a mesh lid, you may be able to cable tie it to the roof so it hangs above the platform and can turn freely (depending on roof height - you don't want it hanging way above the platform). This would remove the need to any duct tape.

I have the 12 inch silent runner, which I think might swing around too much if held by cable ties.

I just measured it and the wheel is 9cm wide. The platform I had been considering putting it on is 15cm wide. I don't know if 6cm would be enough space for him to move around the wheel in...

Edit: Scratch that, I've found another platform which is 25cm wide. I'm pretty sure that would be safe as it would leave 16cm for him to move around the wheel in.

I've had my hamster's wheel on a platform before & it's never been a problem. The Silent Runner wheel has a large metal base, so I used industrial velcro to make sure it did not bounce around on the shelf. In other cases, I've actually drilled a hole through the platform and used thin metal wire to hold the base of the wheel in place.

Kikki thank you I was going to attach the wheel to the cage bars as it is on his current cage. I don’t think it would fit if it was on the stand!

I would make sure that it is in a spot where it would be balanced and couldn't tip over, wouldn't be able to fall on Mushu when Mushu is on the bottom floor and that Mushu wouldn't be able to fall out of it and down to the bottom. Good luck!
