Default Re: Hamster Travel Cage

I have settled on a PetsAtHome guinea travel cage. It was £14 but I got it on a discount. I am really happy with it, and have put her in it for around 5 mins today to get her used to it. I have put very deep bedding too. I am taking her normal cage in the boot as there isn't room for it on the seats because its too big so she can use it while we are actually there. Cucumbers at the ready.

Just a question, if she does get stressed, what can I do to calm her down, in the car. As my usual methods would be too dangerous in the car.

When the car is at a red light, you can always open the lid just a bit and let the hamster feel your hand. Or you can put your hand onto the wires and let the hamster smell you. The travel cage should be strapped into the seat next to you, so there's no reason for you to have difficulty getting to it.

Don't worry too much about the stress. Use some of the substrate from his usual cage in the travel carrier. Then leave it in there as the scent will remain and it will become familiar. Follow the good advice here about what to put in for the journey but really he will settle and sleep most of the time. Hamsters going to shows do a lot of travelling as Fluffagrams says. I used to take my boy away with me even for just 2/3 nights rather than risk leaving him alone. He got very used to it and just slept.

A huge relief! A few people have said they just sleep, so I am very happy about that!

JLPrairie, I will use this idea!
