Question would this cage work??

I'm kinda panicking because my bf is getting me a hammy for my birthday she's a syrian hamster she's grey with red eyes and yeah. He has a cage but it's only suitable for dwarves since he only had dwarves before.

My issue is I feel like it's way too small but I dunno what to do because im buying a storage bin to make a bin cage for her anyway and I'll hopefully have that fully finished within a few days. So I dunno if it's worth buying a brand new cage for her if it's not going to be used for more than a week?

This is the cage he has:

and he said if I wanted he'd buy me a different cage from petsathome maybe this one would be suitable for a temporary cage, or a cage for her to just sleep in and keep the bin cage as a play area and eventually move her into it full time.

Any advice would be great D;

Can you delay buying the hamster - perhaps reserve it and only pick it up when the bin cage is ready? Moving cages twice in a few days will only add stress (and stress can cause fatal wet tail - not pleasant).

Alternatively, can you expedite the bin cage?

As a note on cage sizes, Wood Green recommends a minimum of 80x50cm of continuous floor space for both Syrians and dwarves woodgreen.org.uk/pet_advice/557_hamster_accommodation It can be hard to find boxes that are that large, but the Ikea Samla 130L comes closest. The other alternative is to merge two, like this http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/...e_1337/1-3.jpg

If you won’t be able to finish the bin cage in time, could you possibly just buy a bigger cage instead? Maybe once you have had your new hamster for a while, you could make a bin cage if you are still set on the idea.

That cage in the link really is not suitable for a syrian and also would not fit a big enough wheel (it is too small for dwarves too actually), and, like InkyPen, I would not reccommend changing cages twice in such quick succession.

If you are going to buy a new cage, I would not get a hamster from pets at home, though a rats cage might work, depending on the size. Even their “large” hamster cages are too small.

The Alaska from Zooplus is a good cage for a syrian. I have it myself, as do many other members. You can get it for a good price on zooplus (about 33 pounds).

Anything smaller than the Alaska (84cm X 48.5cm X 44cm) is going to be too small for a syrian.

You should also bear in mind that syrians need a big wheel - many sold in pet shops are sadly too small, especially once your ham reaches adulthood. The 12 inch silent runner is used by many here as it is one of the best on the market: very safe, durable and quiet.

Pets at Home have the Savic ruffy (rat) cage. The bar spacing is fine for hamsters or the hamster heaven cage which offer more floor space.

The pink cage could be used for vet visits or as a travel cage.

I would LOVE a Silent Runner! Problem is, outside the USA the postage DOUBLES THE PRICE!

I'm in England and I bought one. I got it from here, which has quite reasonable p&p charges, for England at least. Not sure about Spain, though.

South West Sugar Gliders website says to contact them about international shipping. I did, a week ago and....nothing! So obviously they don't want my money

Oh that’s annoying! Maybe you could find one on ebay or something? Otherwise, there are plenty of other good wheels

FelicityAnn,

If the silent runner is too expensive, there are many other wheels on the market that can be used.

The wodent wheel is still an amazing wheel and is almost completely silent. It's also a bit less pricey. However, it's not quite as durable as the silent runner.

(I see you're in Spain so I tried linking what I assume is Spain's version of Amazon)

If it's available, you could also look into the trixie wheel. This one is super inexpensive and is extremely high quality for its price!

Thanks everyone, I'm unsure as to what to do because im definitely buying the Barney cage from zooplus as it's a great size I'm told. However it wont arrive in time and my bf reserved the hamster already and they wont let us reserve for longer than a week and it'll be exactly a week on the day on my birthday. Kinda worried the hamster will be gone if I wait, and I want her badly because she's the only syrian I've ever seen that looks like her.

Nothing is too expensive for my hamster, my bf did say if I wanted he could buy me a cage from pets at home or petstop.ie possibly as a home for a while until I can make the bin cage.

There's a medium hamster cage and large hamster cage at petsathome he's considering but yeah.

I dunno what to do, if you say changing cages too soon would stress her then I guess maybe I have no real choice but to wait.
