Default Re: Is this a good cage?

I found another cage: the ferplast milos large. Its 58 x 38 x 30,5. I know that is a little small but is there no other option for a cage? I can only find cages that are really big and then they have to big bar spacing. I live in the Netherlands and i dont really know the minimum sizes and stuff, but is a cage with a size of 60x40 big enough when its got a second level? And if someone can find it can you please send me the link of a good cage thats 70x40 or 80x40? Im only planning on putting 1 hamster in it.

I read on the hamster forum for my country they said that the ferplast duna fun was totally fine for a dwarf and i saw a video on youtube where they said that is was a very good cage too. (Russiandwarfhamster.org) Who do i have to believe now? The duna fun fits in my room like a glove and its now dropped in price too so im really thinking about getting it, but what should i do? Im confused a bit...

The Milos is the same size as the Mini Duna so I think it'll be too small, I'm afraid. The minimum ideal size is 70x40cm for a dwarf hamster and 80x50cm for a Syrian. Unfortunately in a lot of places, hamster care is quite outdated

I've used the Mini Duna and the Duna Fun as cages before and while they are fine for baby hamsters, they quickly outgrow them and become stressed. There's also not enough room for them to burrow because of the placement of the water bottle holder and the bars in the Fun.

I'm not sure if these sites ship to the Netherlands and I apologise if they don't but these are the cheapest places I found to get cages that are the correct size.

The ferplast milos large has a cage size of only around 245 sq. inches, so I think it's wayyyyy too small. About the size of those Crittertrail they sell in my country. I would try to avoid using those sources if they recommend the ferplast duna fun.
As I said before, "The levels shown in the cage don't add any extra floor space, because in the wild hamsters are usually not climbing animals and spend most of their time on the ground running around and foraging." So adding levels don't really have any use.
Since you've been mentioning a lot of ferplast items, here is one of the few ferplast cages that are suitable for a hamster:
https://www.ferplast.com/int/maxi-duna-multy.html
There seems to be a couple of other large enough ferplast cages, but since they're marketed toward rabbits and whatnot meshing will be needed.
Your limit of 75x40 is quite small, personally I believe that a cage of that size can't really be considered to be a "good" cage unless the hamster is very unique and feels uncomfortable in large spaces, which most often doesn't happen.
Just a couple useful questions that could help the other members and I narrow down the cages we recommend:

Do you prefer commercial cages over anything that needs very basic DIY?
Are you next to an IKEA?
And, most importantly...
Can you make more room for a cage, more than 75x40?

I would advise against modular cages.Just as with levels, modular connections don't really do anything for the actual floor space and can cause problems. For example, plastic tubes even just used to add modular units to a cage can quickly build up with moisture and end up causing respiratory problems(the same applies to any other plastic item in a cage or that is used by a hamster, with the single exception of plastic wheels).

However, you could use deep substrate and offer natural and digestible tubes which don't cause problems like plastic would(for example willow or seagrass,or in some cases a simple cardboard tube will work).

Can I get a cage for a dwarf hamster that is 70x40 or 75x40? Otherwise it isn't going to fit. And which species can I put in it the best? Roborovski or just a winter white? I'm not that good in diy.

I'm not really sure about cages that size tbh but both robos & Russians need about the same space, they are active little things!
I would think more about what you want from your ham before choosing between the two rather than just the space, robos can be quite hard to hand tame if bought from a pet shop & are sometimes more a pet to watch whereas Russians are generally much easier to tame & more interactive.

Tubes really aren't a good idea, especially with a new ham, they often decide to hide away in the tubes, eat, hoard, pee & sleep in them which is very unhealthy!

A classmate of mine had the Ferplast Duna Fun cage for a Russian dwarf and I worked totally fine. The hamster lived about 1,5-2 years. In my local pet store they live in really small cages, but in the Duna fun I think they will do fine so I think I'm just going for it.

Living is far from thriving Plus, not all signs of a cage being inappropriate are entirely obvious and often go unnoticed.Just because someone you know does something and it seems fine doesn't make it okay or species appropriate, and when it comes to properly caring for animals their needs as a species must come before a desire to have them.

I'm sorry if this seems overly harsh, but I'm merely being realistic and honest.I would suggest looking into other animals that perhaps would fit your available space and preferences much better, for example mice(single males only or multiple females).

So you really can't put 1 hamster in a cage that is 80x40?
