Re: Stealer's new cage-Alaska
I'm sure she will love it A lot of people on here use Fitch substrate. It's recycled food grade paper and you can buy it in bulk, so it works out cheap that way. I get the 10kg bag because the 20kg is a bit big for me to store. The 10kg is a good size and not difficult to find somewhere to squish it indoors Ours is in the corner of a room with a throw over it so it looks like a mini beanbag. It's only available online.

She might need to be left alone for two or three days after the cage move, to settle in, as they can find the change a bit stressful initially, even if they prefer it!

Re: Stealer's new cage-Alaska
Wow, love the setup! I don't use fitch myself, because it would tangle in Mushu's long fur, but I would use fitch if he was a short haired ham. When I was researching fitch, it did seem that the 20kg pack would work out much cheaper than the equivalent amount of woodchips (which I assume you mean, rather than sawdust, which is not good for hamsters!), or pretty much any other form of substrate. It's your choice what to use, though, so long as you are happy with it

Re: Stealer's new cage-Alaska
I don't know how much pine shavings cost these days. As April says the 20kg works out cheaper - it's only a few pounds more. The 10kg lasted me between 4 and 6 months. So worked out about £3 to £4 a month

Re: Stealer's new cage-Alaska
Keep in mind that wood based substrate, while cheap, can cause other problems and really doesn't work well with burrowing animals(it doesn't tend to hold burrows well,is generally quite rough compared to superior substrates such as Fitch, etc)and also often causes allergic reactions(these are rarely seen right away,in fact constant exposure over time is much more likely to cause an allergy to be formed and even then allergies can be difficult to spot as the signs aren't always incredibly obvious and can come in the form of things that may seem normal such as frequent paw licking, however no paper substrate can cause an allergic reaction).
Also it looks like you have a hanging bridge type toy, which at least the hanging fixture would be unsafe on.There should never be any open runged ladders, chains, rings or hooks that can cause toe injury(these are often just as dangerous as chain and must be avoided for safety reasons),fabric, plastic other than wheels(at the very least no plastic item including those with slits or holes will ever have adequate ventilation due to the properties of plastic causing moisture to build up and thus creating a respiratory problem for animals with delicate respiratory systems),or anything with unsafe materials or ingredients in general(although ingredients are a lot harder to list and go into detail on,however at the very least avoiding any artificially or unspecified dyed items or things with artificial or unspecified flavorings along with biproducts/digest/meat and bone meals of any sort that are unspecified which are automatically to be considered unsafe and unspecified preservatives especially in the UK where E&C approved is pointless since it is a loophole to use BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin in treats and such without saying so even though these preservatives are known to cause cancer),etc.

Re: Stealer's new cage-Alaska
Pip has an Alaska as her home, she seems to like it....
I also use woodshavings as substrate and Pip is quite happy with it, I tried Carefresh once with her and it made her sneeze...
Here is a Pic of Pip's set up.
Where did you get that corner shelf from that would be perfect for Pip..
