Exclamation Traveling with Wasabi couldn't get any more confusing.....

OK, so, I'm going to my grandparents' house this summer with my sister (Yay! ) but we're going on a plane (No! ). This is what confused me:
We're going to use Jet Blue (which is this plane company but you probably already know that) and we're not sure if they allow hamsters on the plane. My mom is terrified of hamsters, my dad is going to school (for a better "degree" or something like that) and my brother will be working all day, and those are the only people who are going to be home while I'm gone. I don't think Jet Blue allows hamsters to travel with the owner, and I totally get that, but I can't let her in the back of the plane because of 3 reasons:

1) It's WAY too hot back there
2) I've heard all plane companies "toss" your "luggage" (Wasabi) in the plane
3) I just want to be with her

So.....any advise?

My only suggestion in this case would be using the emotional support animal loophole. While normally it can be a bit of abusing the system and would be discouraged for that reason to use it unnecessarily,in this case it could save a life!

You might need to get Wasabi registered as an emotional support animal first though, but after that it should be possible to keep her with you.

This thread here goes into a lot of details about guinea pig flights, which may be helpful. I know it's a different animal, but some of the same things might apply. Otherwise, could anyone pet sit her for you?

How would I get her registered for emotional support? It sounds like a solution.

I don't know anyone who could pet sit her except the lady I bought her from and let's just say it's not a pet safe inviroment.

You won't get a hamster registered chocomint. It costs $65 dollars just to register and also it says you need a doctor's letter : A letter from your therapist, psychiatrist, or other licensed mental health professional that prescribes or endorses you to have or obtain an emotional support animal to ameliorate the symptoms of your emotional, psychiatric, or mental disability.

I don't think it is fair to do that sort of thing. It would be very costly to have a pet sitter for an entire summer. I would suggest training up your family to care for your hamster while you are gone or asking to be driven to your grandparents or taking the train or bus perhaps? You would need to take the cage as well. How about a friend? Would they do it?
You can google pet sitters in your local area and call and ask or ask your family to arrange care for your hamster.

I have to agree with souffle, it's pretty pointless to try. Besides it being much more difficult than you'd think (it really isn't as simple as saying they're an emotional support animal), it's also just not morally right. It's a lengthy process to get this completed, and registering an animal who isn't really providing support, is part of why there are proposed bans on animals who really are providing support for people who need them (i.e. veterans with PTSD). It's not fair to abuse the system and potentially get it taken for everyone, especially when there are plenty of other options out there! I'd try to find someone who is willing to take her in while you're away. It really isn't as hard as you'd think. I myself have offered to help someone in a similar situation to yours so I'm sure you're bound to find somebody else. Good luck with your search, hope everything works out

I'm only going to be at my grandma's for about 2 weeks and my grandparents live about 3 states away so my mom doesn't want to drive. I tried to teach them but my mom is too terrified, my dad is too busy, and as soon as I leave my brother forgets about feeding Wasabi and starts playing with her.

Leaving him at home if it is only for 2 weeks is by far the best idea. Wasabi won't suffer as long as he is fed and watered in that time. A friend or neighbour could maybe have him or you could get your mum simply putting in a scoop of food and a bit of veg and changing the water. You can teach her to do that before you go surely and maybe call her every day to check she has done it?
