I think it's even more common in US hamsters but still not rare in the UK by any means.Perhaps you and many others could've gotten lucky with many hamsters with good genetics or something along those lines! The only major difference between UK and US shavings would be that in the UK you'd often get dust extracted shavings, but that hasn't exactly stopped UK hamsters from having allergic reactions.

It could even be that like dogs and other animals allergic reactions present themselves in many different ways, perhaps even ways that some people wouldn't notice or if they did notice they wouldn't really question it.

I get that some hamsters might be "allergic" to shavings, but I think for the most they aren't. And if they were I would probably just switch to paper bedding. My old hamster was allergic to sand baths, though she really enjoyed it. Could of just had a bad batch though.
I don't see why a lot of hamsters could be allergic to the shavings, I think it's just as likely to be allergic to sand baths honestly.

I rarely if ever find hamsters allergic to sand baths.Wood is much more likely to cause allergies, especially since there would be constant exposure as it would be used as substrate and therefore there is no way to not be exposed to it(constant exposure to something often leads to allergies developing, while instant allergic reactions aren't as common!).

I'm sure hams are like us & can react to just about anything, I'm like vectis though more allergic than any of my hams have ever been

I remember the days before Fitch, not so long ago really when almost all hams were kept on either shavings or carefresh with just a few people using megazorb & we certainly didn't have lots of unexplained allergic type symptoms or hams with unexplained illnesses.

I'd have to agree with Vectis and Cypher, I've had more problems with substrates than my hamsters have and in the years I've been keeping hamsters, I've only ever had one hamster develop an issue with it. Many people over the years have used woodshavings for years without problems and I know many people who still use them in their hamsters cages because they have found that is what suits them and their hamsters best.

The last time I had a pack of the Pets at Home brand of shavings, I found that there was a few larger chunks of wood that I removed but in most cases you'd be checking the substrate as you're putting it in your hamster's cage anyway. The other brands that are pretty good is the Snowflake one (it's fairly cheap in Home Bargains) and the Smart Pet one which again is fairly cheap, depending on where you buy it from.
