Default KarlieWonderland Wheel

Have any of you tried the Karlie Wonderland wheel ? It's the only wheel that's widely available in my country. I cannot seem to find good plastic wheels (most are too small). So is the Karlie Wheel good? How is it?

Which country are you in?It is entirely possible to get the Silent Runner in the majority of the world, even outside the UK or US

Rodipet sell the Silent Runner, although their dimensions are not accurate. They list the largest as a 29 cm wheel which is not true as it is a 12 inch or 30.48 cm wheel. The Silent Runner is an investment but it is long lasting with superior quality to any other wheel on the market,as well as being the absolute safest wheel on the market(no open wheel can compare, and even the other enclosed wheels on the market barely come even slightly close to the perfection that is the Silent Runner).

I live in Portugal and there really aren't many pet shops that sell good hamster stuff.

I've never used this wheel personally, but I'd say it would be just fine to use. They look really nice too, and everyone I've met that has used them, never had a complaint. Though obviously a silent runner, trixie, or wodent wheel would be best, other wheels are just fine to be used. Can you get hold of something called plastikote? (Not the automotive kind) it's a safe kind of varnish you can put on wheels to ensure pee doesn't soak it and it doesn't get destroyed right off the bat from chewing. If you can't get it, that's alright, but you may find the wheel becomes too soiled to use after just a short period of time unfortunately. All in all though, they're a pretty good wheel in my opinion

I've used the 20cm karlie for my dwarf hams & it's a good quality quiet wheel, you do need to give them a check over before use just to be sure there are no splinters or rough edges (I've had a few with no problems) & ideally paint it before use to water proof it, I don't know if you can get it but here we use Plastikote water based enamel to paint wooden items.

I don't know if anyone else has ordered any lately but they appear to have changed the design slightly, and the running surface now has a cork covering.

I use it for my roborovski and for one of my syrians. I love them. I painted them with cuprinol garden shades paint (water based) to protect them from wee.

They are nice a quiet. It is a good idea to check for any rough/splintered areas. I have never had any problems with mine.

I made a thread about it a few days ago. =P

Anyway, I've used the old runged version, and have the new cork version. No issues, and I've had Robos, hybrids, and Syrians using the runged ones.

Pros:
- Silent. So far, only the P@H silent plastic wheel has been as quiet, but it's only suitable for dwarfs.
- Looks nice. Silent Runner is hideous and pretty much the only reason I wont get it. =/ But, I have other options, so no problem.
- Light enough for even a 20g Robo to run in.
- Cheap. On Zooplus, anyway. Amazon's 2-3x more expensive.
- Sturdy. Has a nice solid base and I suspect even larger hamsters (220g+) could use it.

Cons:
- Needs sandpapering. Might be splinters, and I tend to sand down all the edges just so there's nothing 'sharp' that may hurt a hamster.
- Really needs water-proofing. Plastikote is best, but any non-toxic, child-safe water proofer should be okay.
- Can't hang it from the cage roof (/side? lol) due to solid base of it. Less digging room.
- Rare but potential issue: Hamster claws may get trapped in the edges of the rungs. I've never had any issues, as I said, but I tended to put a thick layer of Plastikote on (well, 3-5 thin layers), so that probably filled in any/all gaps. If available, get the cork version.

I bought a trixie wheel from a seller based in Portugal off ebay. You should check it out on ebay!
