Default Opinions on these cages?

Some of you may know I'm hoping to buy a new cage in the next couple of months so I'm currently looking at quite a few different cages at the moment I'm still really new to hamsters and even though I try to be up to date and informed on everything as much as possible I'm stll completely stuck on what cage to buy

I found these two cages on eBay and though I'd ask for your opinions on them. Bambi is a dwarf hamster but I'd like a cage that would be mostly suitable for all species of hamsters. So are any of these cages suitable and if so which one do you think would be the best?

Thank you.

Both would make great cages in my opinion! The first is about 950 sq in and the second is over 1,000 sq in which would make both suitable for all species (with the latter being best for Syrians). I think the second one would be best as it's obviously bigger, but both would be just fine so it's up to you in the end! I really am envious of the cages in the UK and other countries. All of the cages we have here aren't even close to being suitable!

I'm not overly impressed by those cages tbh, being wood you would need to paint the whole thing with Plastikote to begin with, you would also have to be careful with your set up, especially with a dwarf ham to avoid falls as some of the shelves are quite high.
I've read some reviews (amazon I think) that suggest they may not be that well made either.
I think you'd probably do better either getting a barred cage from zooplus or looking at zoozone tank style cages.

They look spacious and such and so long as the wood is not treated with anything toxic to hamsters then I'd imagine they are safe. However, gnawing would be an issue I'd imagine. That is why I have never gone with a wooden cage. But, it's up to you.

I think that they look great and appear spacious but as Cypher has pointed out, you would have to coat it in Plastikote to prevent pee soaking in and making the cage smell after a while. I'd also be concerned that the wood is going to be easily chewed through by a particuarly cheeky hamster.

just looked at the reviews on the 2nd one and someone has written that they had to alter the lid as it did not sit flush and they didn't want to chance any escape.
I would have concerns over the pull out draw and the spacing between the draw and sides of the cage. I could see any dwarf escaping from that.
which is a shame as they are a nice price. but i would be prepared to make a few adjustment.

Those cages are both great sizes but I'd be worried about the wood. Left untreated urine and cleaners would rot it and make it smell so it wouldn't be a long term cage.
You could paint it with plastikote but that would be very expensive.

If you can I'd say try and find a plastic cage or glass tank. It'll last longer and probably end up a lot cheaper when you take into account the cost of painting the wooden ones.
Zooplus have great cages.

Out of the two, I think the second one is best. The first one is a great size, but if you email the seller you may find it is made of cedarwood. (That's what happened when I enquired about the first one). Although I believe there are slightly different versions and it might be pine.

The second one is pine, so fine. I think they can be a bit roughly made, but someone on here had one and you can have masses of substrate if you swap the bottom door and the panel above it round when constructing it. Apparently that bit's quite easy during the construction.

You'd probably need some sanding paper handy and as the others said, to plastikote it all.

With the door change though you could have 30cm of substrate maybe for tunneling and it's a lot cheaper than a glass tank. So the height can be of really good use if you can fit 30cm of substrate in and still have enough height. The deep substrate will also avoid the fall risks.

As the others say - if your hamster is a chewer it's not a good idea, but you can reinforce certain areas with metal strips if that turns out to be a problem.

I like the second one - with the door swap. Because then you also get front opening access to your hammy which is a good thing to have.

Painting might be easier using something like Cuprinol garden shades (which I believe some people have used instead of plastikote) but check it out as I'm not really sure about that.

Amazon sell the second one as well - if you get it from there and there's some damage you'll be able to get it swapped/refunded easier maybe.

I cant see the links it says access denied.

I bought a wooden cage with a plexi glass front and the wood is soooooo thin. Never used it cos of this but hope to put it together one day and modify it.

Hopefully the ones that you are looking at are sturdier.
