Alternatives to plastic tubes for dwarf hamsters?

I have two robos that love burrowing and exploring places. I keep thinking they'd be happy with tubes - just like distributed in their bedding - but I feel hesitant about those pet store tubes. Partly because I've heard really negative things about them, although it's typically only where Syrians are involved.
Are there any safer alternatives? Would things like toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls work? I also saw those rat tunnels, but I read somewhere on this forum that if a hammie chews them they could get really hurt.

Cardboard tubes are absolutely fine, safer than plastic & they can chew them if they want to & you can just replace them as need be.
You could also use something like the smallest seagrass tunnel (still quite big for a robo but I've used them with Chinese & Russian hams), you can also get woven willow tunnels, cork tunnels or tubes are great too but tend to be quite big & those do need to be baked & or frozen before use in case of bugs!

I use toilet roll inners for my roborovski. She loves them.
