Post Aspen or other safe substrates in Germany?

Hey there everyone!

I'm from Germany and I have a lot of trouble finding safe substrates for my cage... Most German brands have no details on which wood was used so I can't be sure that it is actually safe for my hamster...

Does anyone know a safe substrate that is available in Germany?
I don't want to order it online because it costs way more than the product normally does...

I've never come across Aspen bedding or similar brands in German shops sadly... Or have I been missing one?

Thanks in advance, for any suggestions!

._.

As far as I can tell from reading the German ham forum most people there seem to use Allspan, I don't really know anything about it but you could ask there if you're not sure.

Hi. Zooplus sells hemp bedding They also sell Chipsi bedding which is part pine, part spruce and I believe some German owners use that. Spruce is equivalent to hardwood. The only thing is, it doesn't specify what percentage is pine and what percentage spruce.

But there are lots of alternatives - the hemp on Zooplus (Hugro or Siccofloor - I think Hugro is better).

Rodipet also sell Hugro hemp, plus they sell birchwood shavings (hardwood). They also sell Miscanthus bedding but I believe that's a bit scratchy. Once you look on that site you'd better hide your purse!

I think I found some "Aspen Snake Bedding" in a local shop, can this be used too? Or do you need Aspen specifically declared for rodents?

Being a bit prone to trying new things on Rodipet I did try both the miscanthus & birchwood some time ago, the miscanthus is really sharp (i didn't use any of it) & the birchwood was about the dustiest substrate I ever tried! Not impressed

No idea about the snake bedding Merle, I think some may be safe & some not so probably be better to use something tried & tested.
Did you look at allspan?

If all else fails, you can use PLAIN potting soil, no fertilizers and whatnot as substrate. Ideally though you'd want to mix it with some other safe substrate, as dry soil doesn't really hold tunnels up easily.

Soil would hold humidity so it really isn't species appropriate and could cause serious health problems as well However,DIY paper substrate could be a good choice and would certainly be safer than wood substrate at the very least. It would be time consuming, but if made in a large enough amount and kept very deep it would not need complete replacing for a long time.

Soil certainly wouldn't be suitable & I think it would take a huge amount of time & effort to make paper bedding & even then it would be far from ideal, when so many people in Germany keep hamsters with no problems using the substrate available there it should be straightforward to find some & use that.

ETA I know you said you don't want to order online Merle but tbh is usually works out cheaper in the long run as you can get larger amounts than you normally do in pet shops so it pays to make a bit of an investment & most substrate isn't difficult to store.
I looked at allspan on one site & it works out cheaper than fitch does here which can't be bad if you don't mind a big bale!
