Re: Switching cages for my winter white.
Well couldn't find any stuff to make a lid. We are gonna check Lowe's soon. I never though of getting a reptile lid. Might have to look into that.
Thanks everyone for you advice!!!

Re: Switching cages for my winter white.
Have you checked Home Depot? The supplies I just bought to make a lid (haven't made the lid yet tho) were all from Home Depot.

Re: Switching cages for my winter white.
From Home Depot you can get 1/2 inch hardware cloth(aka wire mesh)which could cost about $16 or so for a really nice sized roll that will last a lot of different DIY projects.Untreated pine is the other thing you'd need, and a very basic(even cheap if you want to go cheap)drill to put things together. It's definitely more useful than a reptile lid,as while a reptile lid is effective enough for ventilation it's pretty much impossible to hang toys from the tiny holes of reptile lids.
You might need to look at a few different hardware stores and maybe even try to find a local source for lumber if it comes down to it.

The problem with using tubes to connect cages is that they unfortunately do not add any extra floor space! Floor space is defined as an uninterrupted area that a hamster can run through without stopping or having to change motions. Unfortunately, a hamster must stop and crawl through a tube to get into the other side so it doesn't quite count. The best way to attach another cage/bin is by cutting out the side panel and attaching the two bins with zip ties
