One or Two CRD Hamsters?
So I have a Campbell's RD Hamster (still in the process of taming) and my girlfriend thinks it would be a good idea to get him a friend. I think (as I've only had him a week) that this would be a bad idea because of the additional stress. Can anyone with experience tell me if it's better to have one or two in the same habitat? Thanks

Re: One or Two CRD Hamsters?
You absolutely should not introduce hamsters It's extremely dangerous and will end badly.
It is also extremely unnatural to have several of any species living together, considering in the wild only mixed sexes would live together and that would be for breeding purposes. They are not social creatures like rats or female mice, and they do far better alone

While generally campbell's can be housed in groups, this generally only works with littermates, that is, hamsters born in the same nest. I'm afraid 'getting him a friend' won't end well.

Re: One or Two CRD Hamsters?
Amity is correct, two hamsters who haven't grown up together since a very young age should NEVER be introduced to one another at all under any circumstances. Besides the fact that even sibling and pairs who have grown up together often fall out as well despite being together their whole lives. As mentioned above, it's simply not a natural setup for them and should be avoided if possible. Pairs that have grown up together (siblings) and have never been seperated can be kept with one another, but this is a stressful situation and takes a lot of time and heartbreak to ensure all is right with them, and in the end, you could find yourself coming home to a dead or severely injured ham If you really want another hamster, why not instead you get another large enclosure and simply keep another in there? Best wishes

Certainly not. Ditto everything the others have said.

Re: One or Two CRD Hamsters?
No. Campbells usually can only live together with brothers or sisters, and even those situations can end horribly. It is completely unnatural to live in pairs unless it's opposite-sex (which, obviously, would lead to a pregnant hamster).

Thanks everyone, I figured it would be more negative than positive. He seems to be contempt on his own but I wasn't sure as I've heard different things from different sources. He is adjusting well to me and his new home and I'm confident he will live a long happy life here.

Re: One or Two CRD Hamsters?
It usually is hard to find sources agreeing on things Of course, informed and up to date sources which do understand natural behavior would agree with what has been said on this thread,in fact I've even heard that in some forums from other parts of the world the discussion of keeping dwarf hamsters in groups of any kind is essentially banned!

Yes there is a lot of contradictory information out there and I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to keep my pet healthy and happy

You definitely did the right thing by asking! Many owners wouldn't think to double check unfortunately If you ever have any more questions, please ask!
