Default Kerry Terranium / Glass Tank?

Does anyone have this tank? I have one robo and it looks perfect for digging 😍 but obviously it's not cheap 😬 Would love to hear from anyone who has it and for lay out ideas?

Hello it does look like a good cage for a robo, however you can get cages like the zoozone 2 which are bigger and they cost a bit less. I think that tank is only about 70cm right? Correct me if I'm wrong.. The Zoozone cages would be cheaper and the zoozone 2 is bigger. If you like tank styled cafes you can also look at the detolf!

Good info from Megan and Misty there. A detolf costs £40 and is bigger If you have the space for it. It's an Ikea glass cabinet tipped on it's back with the door left off. It does mean a little bit of diy to make a lid for it but it is just strips of wood with some mesh stapled on.

I think the Kerry is a lovely tank - I just wish it was 90 or 100 cm instead of 75cm. It is still a good size but it's a lot to spend if it turns out your Robo needs more space and they can be very active.

As Megan and Misty says, there is also the 100cm Zoozone 2 if the detolf is too big for you to fit in. That can be got for about £50. The bars are 2cm though so they need meshing. There is also the Maxi duna multy, which doesn't need meshing but costs about £80.

Zooplus also have a 100cm (well 95cm) tank similar to the Kerry. It has glass front and back and base and wood ends but the wood is all wipe clean and treated with a petsafe varnish of some kind. It has a lift-up lid with small mesh. The Marrakesch. It is quite expensive though - about £130.

Here's the Zoozone - it does need meshing or a robo will escape!

Maxi duna multy - has narrow bar spacing

The Marrakesch tank - currently £119

As you say though, the advantages of a glass tank are you can go a lot deeper with the substrate. It's a shame glass tanks are so expensive in this country. You could also look out on ebay for a second hand 3 or 4 foot fish tank. I've never had much luck finding one - they are either not deep enough usually or ridiculously expensive.

I think the detolf is the best option - it's not expensive and plenty of space. You can even split it in half or section of a third as a deep digging area.

It does need something to stand on really though, which bumps up the price a bit. Two of the small Kallax units cost about £40 making it cost £80 with the detolf - but you do get a lot of storage underneath. A cheaper option is a couple of Ikea lack tables. Or you might have a long sideboard or something it could stand on.

If it was me, I'd go with the detolf - if you can fit it in. It also looks really nice

The Detolf,if set up properly and gradually adjusted to the full space, would be wonderful for most species(just not great for Syrians, but wonderful for anything else). However as with any cage it does need to be set up just right to keep a robo(or any other hamster for that matter)feeling comfortable otherwise you might assume that it's "too big"

I think the bonus storage with the Detolf on Kallax units is a huge bonus,as you can never have too much storage for random things plus you can potentially eliminate the need for other furniture taking up more space than necessary!

Unfortunately tanks are expensive premade no matter what, and it can be difficult to make your own if you don't know how Luckily, robos are generally one of the easiest species to house(much easier than a Syrian,at the very least!)with lots of potential choices on the market.

Not sure which part of the world you are in but in the Uk at least, there are usually baby robos in hamster rescues. People buy a pair that have been mis-sexed and end up with unwanted litters (sometimes two or three litters as they reproduce so quickly if mis-sexed). Just a suggestion to look there before getting one from a pet shop

I did have a Kerry, the one advantage of it is that you can get plenty of deep substrate in there for digging but it's also very heavy so that's something to bear in mind, I found it really hard to manage, lifting it even empty really is a two person job not that you'd need to move it often I wouldn't think but still something to be aware of.
I only used mine briefly as it's too small for my purposes really & I found that once you'd got a house & decent size wheel in there wasn't much room for anything else.

I have just got the large Marrakesch from zooplus as my Syrian started to chew the plastic of he Alexander cage. you can get loads of substrate in there.

If you want ideas on the detolf I have been looking on pintrest lately for ideas on my new tank and I have found quite a few people who have detolf habitats you could look on there for ideas and some of them look really great. but I do agree with the opinion of making sure you have the space. brake out a measuring tape! I did consider the detolf but penny would have had a great time chewing the bars.

I have two kallax units from ikea for my Marrakesch tank to sit on and they have made a huge improvement in the storage in my room. plus they are good solid pieces of furniture.

take your time and consider all the facts it took me two months to decide on the Marrakesch and alot of help from people on HC. the end result one very happy Syrian!

I have a Kerry that I keep Syrians in and I really like it. As it's straight sides, you don't lose any of the space like you do with sloping base cages. I don't have space for a bigger cage but so far none of my hams have seemed to have needed it. My previous robo would have found it too deep even packed with substrate but that's not to say it wouldn't work - just depends on the induvidual ham. Hector didn't like big spaces! As cypher said, it is very heavy, which is the only real downside for me. That and the cost. I managed to find a metal coffee table on wheels from IKEA (from the ps range) that is more or less the right size so that's good to keep it on and if I need to shift it slightly to a different part of the room but there's no way I could lift up but then the same would be true for any glass tank I imagine.
