Bored hamster?
Please help!
My 1 year old syrian has a MAHOOSIVE house, a traditional wheel and a flying saucer wheel. I have hides and chews but she won't chew a thing! She hardly plays in the wheels and I have no idea what else to five her to entertain her through the night. What works best for you and your hammy?
TIA!

Re: Bored hamster?
Most hamsters ignore chew toys, so that seems normal.
How big is the wheel and cage? These can affect the activity of the hamster This is a recent thread with lots of enrichment suggestions. DIY toys are quite common and can be very fun to make. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube, but I personally recommend VanillaHamHam and ErinsAnimals. Climbing toys could be good for her, but you'd need to look for rat toys. Most Syrians enjoy Sputnik houses.

The house is a detolf house so about 45cm by 45cm by 179cm to pretty big! The wheels are both 12'' so plenty big enough. Ahh yeah erinsanimals is great! I'll take a look at the other channel your mentioned! I've just out a ladder up to the mesh lid as she used to love climbing upside down. I'll pick some climbing toys up tomorrow or try a diy!

Re: Bored hamster?
I agree with chesca, not many hamsters actually chew! Why not try creating some "Brain toys"? These are fun and stimulating, and they help improve your hamster's problem solving capability. One idea is simply a toilet paper tube stuffed with tissue and treats hidden in the middle and covered so you hamster must shred the tube or pull all the tissue out to get the treats. Do you bowl or scatter feed? If you bowl feed, why not give scatter feeding a shot? It's fun, natural, and stimulating for your hamster. Is there any particular behavior your hamster is exhibiting that makes you feel she's in need of more enrichment? If she doesn't show any signs of being bored, chances are she's actually quite content as is

Re: Bored hamster?
Oh ok! Sounds like a very lucky ham then ! Has she got deep bedding or a digging pit? You can take one of those massive guinea pig/rabbit bendy bridges and use it to hold a large amount of bedding up, with something like an extendable tunnel or tubes to get down. She would probably enjoy building a big nest in one of those.

Re: Bored hamster?
Sounds like you're already doing a good job! Many hamsters ignore wooden chew toys. One thing that does go down quite well is Whimzees dog chews - they're hard enough to wear down their teeth but tasty enough to be interesting!

Re: Bored hamster?
Everyone posted practically all of my ideas already
To get him to chew on the wood chews, rub a strongly-scented treat on them. If they have holes in them to hang them on ka-bobs then stuff food in those.
There are many articles online of how to make "burrow boxes"-- I just use a tissue box because I have a dwarf but for a Syrian, you'd need a bigger one.
Hope this helps!
