Hardware Cloth Issues
Just finished my bin cage using the zip-tie method....FINALLY.
I'm a little concerned about the mesh's super shar edges. Being the idiot, I had decided to put my hardware cloth on the inside....where all the sharp edges could stab a hamster in the neck or something.Ther are 3 panels, 2 on the top and 1 on the side. The top side of the side panel is full of sharp edges, and half of the edges on the lid are full of sharp edges as well, although I'm more concerned about the side panels. What should I do?

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
It is kind of hard to fix the problem with mesh already attached You could remove it and reattach though, after filing the edges very carefully and then reattaching from the outside.I know a lot of people would say just use hot glue but that is not a good idea since a hamster would just end up chewing the glue off and eventually bring back the initial problem(so it's just a bandaid,in a way, rather than a permanent solution).

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
I put my mesh on the inside as well.
Can you remove it - and use your wire cutters to cut as flush as you can?
Other ideas are using a dremel to sand down the edges (or a metal file). Or using the plastic windows you cut out to frame it, so that the edges are not exposed.
It's tough. I totally get it! We run into this problem a lot too.

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
If I were you I'd just cut the zip ties (they're cheap...) take the mesh off and reattach to the outside using new zip ties.
If you're concerned about the sharp edges on the outside (e.g. if you have small children) then you've got a lot more options for covering up the sharp edges there, where the hamster can't get to them (e.g. duct tape, hot glue)

Moving it to the outside is of course a fine option too. But many Syrians will Chee the plastic bin if they have the chance.

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
I'm trying to do my best to not have to reattach it, as the closest place to buy zip ties is about 30 miles away... any other way? I think I'll probably frame it, how would I do it?

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
If this is the case, is there anything you can use to cover it? Something that's soft and won't cover too much of the actual mesh. Maybe a seagrass mat cut up and tied on somehow. Or use wire cutters to cut it down as much as possible, then sand it down the rest of the way to make sure it's smooth and safe

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
I have some leftover plastic from cutting the holes in the bin, but it's heavy duty plastic. So not that soft. I'm thinking of using a soft plastic lid from a container long lost in the ocean of junk within my house... hehe. It's pretty bendy, but how would I attatch it to cover the mesh?

Re: Hardware Cloth Issues
You could try to file the sharp edges with an industrial file. They aren't very expensive.
