I just bought a platform that i'm going to put the wheel on + yes she's in her playpen most days and her ball a couple of times a week. She has also been on the stairs a few times as well.

By the time I had bought all the materials I needed (Mesh was particularly expensive) my detolf lid cost me almost £30- factor that into the choice, try and see if you can source the materials somewhere cheaper than I did (We were having an emergency as Luna had chewed through her previous home)
Luna only seems to chew the bars when people are about, I think its completely an attention thing and she stops as soon as she's fussed over or let out- they are in an awkward position for them to really get at.

It really depends on the individual hamster. Some will bar chew for attention, others do it out of boredom.

If it is accompanied by other obsessive behaviors or stereotypic behaviors it is even more of an indicator of boredom, but without those other indicators it can be a bit difficult to understand.
