My first bin cage!
I had to separate my pair Francisco and Stephano so this is my first attempt at making a bin cage.
The bin I used was 80 x 40cm and it was £10 from Wilko, the mesh I used for the lid was £3.50 I didn't have the tools to cut a hole in the bin lid so I had to make a new lid entirely from mesh (I'll get my dad to help me make a proper lid soon).
He seems pretty happy with his new cage.

Comparison with Francisco's Duna Fun Large (lower platform is being cleaned and will be placed back in his cage tomorrow).

Re: My first bin cage!
Can you get a wood burning knife from a craft store or something like that? They tend to be fairly cheap in my experience and should cut through plastic perfectly with the right blade attachment, and would not have the risk of cracking the plastic like a lot of other tools!
It really does look like a good start, not quite as big as would be best for a Russian but again as a start it would be wonderful especially to transition a more nervous hamster into something even bigger like directly attaching more bins(or just one in this case)but it could also be a great size for robos and Chinese, although a bit bigger than necessary.
Maybe add some extra hiding spaces eventually,or a platform to double as a roof cover/a hideout which can hold a sand bath on top.It definitely has potential, especially if it had a slightly bigger extra bin directly attached just to allow for even more enrichment or possibly as a burrowing bin instead with only a portion of the bin(near the entrance)keeping the substrate a bit shallower with some sort of bendy bridge, and then the rest just piled up with loads of substrate.

Re: My first bin cage!
Attaching another bin is what I'm planning to do once he's adjusted to his new home I just don't have the tools to do it now and I couldn't find a larger bin this quickly.
He usually has a sand bath but I've removed it because the sand was rubbing on his poor skin and irritating it further. He's doing better now though and I should be able to put it back in a few days.
Tomorrow I'm going to add an egg carton maze and a tissue box for him to hide in. He really liked his old egg cartons but one of them is with Franny and the other one got blood in it and had to be thrown away
A burrowing bin is a good idea! I have something similar for my hybrid Marcello

Re: My first bin cage!
Sounds wonderful!I don't think it's easy to find big bins, especially at as good a price as you got this one at
There is definitely a lot to choose from when it comes to dwarf hamsters! They're just so tiny and fit into many things easily, which is a very good thing for hamster owners. The egg carton maze sounds very fun, maybe a few toilet paper tubes cut and stuck together as well?Just an idea,or maybe something similar but made out of wood or popsicle sticks or another safe material!
Luckily there are also plenty storebought toy options for dwarf hamsters as well, but those can get expensive for the really nice ones
