Default Do Syrians needs to climb?

For my future hamster I'm planning on getting the ZooZone 2 large cage and was wondering if I need to provide different levels for a Syrian or if they're fine with a few logs and ramps instead of levels.
I also understand the ZooZone needs to be meshed on the lid

It's really whatever you prefer. Hamsters in general tend to like floor space much more than height, but will appreciate any climbing things you give them. Some hams prefer levels, but some prefer logs, it's all really your preference as well as theirs

Thank you Drago. I've heard many different opinions about if they need to climb so it's good to know it's up to me

There's definitely a lot of misinformation regarding hamster cages and toys!

Unfortunately, some people just don't know that hamsters are essentially terrestrial creatures, meaning they live on the ground rather than climbing and such.

Climbing toys intended for small animals are rarely if ever appropriate for hamsters,as there always seems to be some sort of unsafe feature whether it be chains or gaps in ladders or other things. While some of these toys could work for rats(or other climbing animals),that does not mean they're hamster safe as rats and hamsters are extremely different in a lot of ways despite a few similarities!

Thank you I've owned rats before (last year) and I know how much they love to climb! Didn't want to give climbing toys if they're not needed

They seem to love to dig much more than climb!
Luna doesn't have "climbing" toys, but she has a hammock and a sputnik and she likes to sit in them both.

My Syrian lived in a Maxi Duna so very similar to the ZooZone. He loved tunnels and low toys best, but I did give him a couple of climbing options too which he did use. His favourite was the Trixie big platform with a bendy bridge going up to it.

Thanks barley I've seen the trixie platform before and sounds like your hamster loves it so hopefully my future hammy will too!

Agree with the others As Drago says they are better with more floor area than height and like roaming and digging. I think they need a platform and the Trixie one that Barley mentions is ideal. It also gives them something to sit under and something to climb up that isn't too high. They sometimes like to sit on a platform to have a wash, plus it gives you more surface area to add toys and hides.

In my opinion Hamsters only really climb if they are in a tall cage - because they can! And maybe to see if they can get out of the top. And they're not very good at getting down and tend to just drop and can hurt themselves.

The key is enrichment - so different levels is good, places to go, things to do, plenty of substrate to dig in and a house that's big enough for a good sized nest and is dark inside. Another option is to have a large house with a flat roof that doubles up as a platform - and have a smaller platform at the other end

Rat sputniks are also popular and something to climb into (they hang quite low in something like a Zoozone so they can climb in from the substrate level). They tend to be popular "basking" places if you put some bedding in them. It's difficult to place with the lift up lid but I think they fit ok if it's towards the back of the lid where it hinges - then it lifts out when you open the lid so you need to check your hammy isn't in it first! Likewise a grass hammock could hang down from the lid and give something to climb into and sit on.
