Question Cage Accessories

Hey! It's been a while since I've been on here.

I'm looking for some help as I have a little russian dwarf hybrid hamster at the moment but her cage is looking pretty bare. I'm going to buy her new things but I'm a little rusty on my knowledge of hamster products.

If any of you could recommend me some things to buy that would be a great help. I need a new wheel and any other toys and such to keep her entertained. I'm also looking for a playpen. I'd prefer to buy stuff from amazon but I'm open to your suggestions!

Hello and welcome back! I would recommend lots and lots of bendy bridges, they're so versatile and fun. I'd go for the more natural ones, but even the colorful ones are fine. Coconuts, bamboo tunnels, and other fun and natural things will help enhance her experience. I recommend the silent runner as it's an amazing wheel, but I'm not quite sure if they make it sizes that are good for Russian dwarves. Play pens can be easy to escape from, so I'd recommend a stand up shower, or bathtub with lots of toys spread all throughout to entertain her.

For cheap things, cardboard toys can be lots of fun for your little one to climb and chew on. Have fun with your little ham, and enjoy decorating!

A 9 inch Silent Runner would be wonderful! They're worth the investment, even if you have to order them online. They're much better quality than most wheels on the market, especially considering something like a Silent Spinner which would stop working within 6 months and the only sizes suitable for Russian dwarfs are nowhere near as good as Silent Runners and other wheels.Ideally the wheel should be 8 inches for a Russian hamster, and the 6 inch Silent Spinner would barely allow for a small Russian dwarf hamster to run properly while the 12 inch version is bigger than necessary

You can get a lot of nice things from Zooplus and some other websites without being limited to just Amazon

My 3 hybrids have bendy bridges (these are really good for hiding under or replacing platform ladders depending on the cage), ferplast tunnels, wheels and flying saucers, sand baths, burrowing areas, a maze, a coconut, and various boxes.

You can make dwarf hamster mazes from cardboard egg cartons. Just cut an entrance hole and place it upside down in their cage. I've made a lollipop house as a hideout for my youngest hybrid, and my older pair have a cardboard house (glued a few boxes together and cut out holes at various heights). You could also section off an area of her cage for her to burrow in. You can also give her tissue roll tubes with a bit of tissue still attached (they love tearing the paper off to use in their nests).

When you buy things like hamster wheels I find that if it's marketed for dwarfs it's actually too small so go for the 'Syrian' sized option (usually to small for Syrians tbh).

For a playpen. Have a look at the stylish playpen thread. It's easy to make, folds up for storing and can be customised to make it bigger/smaller or different shapes to go around a corner etc.

As the others have said you can't go far wrong with lots of bendy bridges, for free cardboard boxes, egg boxes & cardboard tubes all make great toys.
Small terracotta flower pots are good too, you can half bury them & hide food or treats in for them to dig out & it's a good surface to help with wearing down nails.
The sea grass tunnels (available from Amazon) have been very popular with mine as have coconuts.
A good size fairly deep sand bath is pretty much an essential if she doesn't already have one, you can use large glass jars or just a plastic box, my current hybrid has a large plastic box half covered by a large bendy bridge & it's his favourite place to be!

Good wheels are a bit thin on the ground at the moment, the new design silent spinners don't work too well & the Karlie wooden wheels are almost impossible to get hold of.
The silent runner wheels are really good, mine have them & love them but they are big & take up a lot of cage space & many cages won't be tall enough to accommodate them easily so it depends on what cage you have.
There is a new wheel similar to the silent spinner which velma reviewed here, I think Amazon sell something similar or maybe the same but I'm not sure.

I use the metal play pens for all my hybrids, as long as you don't put anything close to the edges they can't climb out & they're a good size for them, fold flat too.
If you go for the stylish playpen idea you will need to block off some spaces at the bottom to make it safe for dwarf hams.
