Default Hemp bedding

I have got some hemp bedding to try for a bit variety from the fitch and carefresh but wondered if it would be best to freeze before use?

I always recommend freezing any type of bedding for 24 hours before use, but it isn't too much of a worry in all honesty. I believe hemp is a type of wood correct? If so, it was likely kiln dried, and the process of kiln drying rids of many nasties. If you're really worried go ahead and freeze it, but don't feel too freaked out if you don't

I've never felt the need to freeze hemp tbh, apparently parasites won't live in it, don't know if that is completely true or not but I have found the same info from various sources & I've used it for years with no problems.

I wouldn't consider hemp as wood. It's a plant, the same plant that produces Marihuana, but yep, on the other hand it's the stem part, it's hard, and it looks like wood. So I don't know.

I have bought (and used) two packages of hemp and I didn't have any problems with them. I can't freeze them because they don't fit on my freezer, so I hope that what cypher says is true

Going off the definition of wood,I'd have to say that hemp cannot be considered wood as it isn't from a tree or shrub.Of course, that doesn't mean it doesn't carry at least some of the risks of wood, but that is a whole separate issue

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I feel comfortable enough not to freeze it after reading through your comments. I would have struggled to fit it in my freezer anyway lol.

Hi I use hemp bedding for my tortoises, I don't freeze before use and haven't had any problems with nasties. May I ask where you got your hemp from as buying tortoise hemp can be expensive sometimes!

I use hemp bedding from zooplus for my guinea pigs. It seems good value. 14kg costs 16 pounds. Its called hemparade. Seems nice and soft. Havent used it for the hamsters yet.
