Soils, grass, hays and stones
I see a lot of different substrates in one cage and I like this idea- I've created two platforms for Margot so would like to put grass/hay/ in/under them- what brands do you recommend for each of these?
(She's a Russian hybrid btw)
And where do you get the large stones from to keep their nails down? Or are they just found outside and washed in soapy water?
Thanks

Re: Soils, grass, hays and stones
This is about the nicest hay I've tried.
A couple of things to bear in mind with hay though, you need to check it over thoroughly & remove any sharp bits that could harm pouches & it's best to freeze it for a minimum of 48 hours to avoid any possible mite problems.
Not sure whether you mean dried grass or grass to grow?
I defnitely wouldn't recommend using any kind of soil in the cage, it's almost impossible to dry out completely & very hard to know if it gets peed on so you could end up with damp & mould problems.
You can sanitise stones from outside to use in the cage, I've only used granite slabs in mine, I know a lot of people do like the natural look of stones but I don't think they help much with nails, especially dwarf nails!

Re: Soils, grass, hays and stones
Smooth stones look nice but won't help with nails.Something like a brick could potentially work,or resin reptile ornaments,or just a rough but not dangerously sharp stone instead.Once nails grow very long it might only be able to get fixed by an actual trimming though,so keep that in mind
You can purchase stones in store from any pet store,or perhaps if you have a local fish store they also might have some interesting rocks to choose from. This is the best way to know what you're getting, since ordering online can end up making you get something you may not even like.

Re: Soils, grass, hays and stones
Fab thanks guys!
I was thinking about rocks from an aquarium actually so next time I'm down the pet shop I'll look in the fish aisle. I think something more textured would be better also. I really don't want to have to deal nail trimming again
