from bar to bin
I've a Mickey XL cage and while it might sound promising it is in fact not. The measurements are about right, 80 x 50 x 38 cm. Right? Wrong!
Spaceous, in paper, but in theory it is just so much space wasted (mind. blown). Let's not even mention the "platform" or accessories included... * shudders*
The roof is too damn high my heart flutters every time Latte decide to play monkey (it doesn't happen often nowadays, bless!)!
Let's even forget using hammocks or other roof accessories unless I lower them immensely!
Basically it's a two story floor cage sold and marketed as one.
What I want to do is build my own bin cage but I've no experience with those.
I know I'm able to grab some really spaceous ones that are wider with less depth.
Would anyone actually recommend going from bar to bin?

He doesn't seem bothered by the size but unless I use a lot of bedding he can't see outside & he do seem to enjoy observing me, lol.
He's only 12 weeks old. :3

Re: from bar to bin
With bin cages they can be expanded and turned into a massive(but cheap)cage, even up to or over a square meter in floor space, but still cost less than a smaller wire cage. You could make them one bin at a time though and make it more of an investment over time in small amounts!

Have you taken the level out?
Having deep substrate will let him see out and be a soft landing if he falls whilst climbing. He can also dig and burrow with more substrate.
A flat topped house and a wooden shelf will be nice for him to sit on and see you.

Re: from bar to bin
I would definitely recommend a bin. As amityville said, one great thing about bin cages is the fact that they're so customizable, and can be expanded upon easily. They also hold way more substrate than most barred cages which is another pro for using them, and like you said, monkey barring worried you, but with bin cages, this isn't an option. Bin cages are fairly easy to make, you don't even necessarily have to read how or watch a tutorial. If you're willing to put in a bit of effort, I'd say switching to a bin cage would be a great option!

Re: from bar to bin
Aye, the level and all the accessories with it were thrown ages ago!
I had a young rescue (Syrian) hamster live in it (the main purpose of the cage really) so I pretty much had to replace everything as the wheel, toys and water bottle were tragically poor quality (and tiny). The level was also barred...
Anyhow I'm off to ikea sometime next week. I'll be on the lookout.
I know the shelves are great options but take up so much space. Space I don't have in this tiny apartment. D:

Re: from bar to bin
Maybe get a few of the largest Samla bins and set up a pair connected directly for now? That would be a cheap somewhat quick fix,and they would not take up a ton of space since you can get bins to add to the system you start that can be angled and placed in a way that adds space but works for what space you have instead of something like a Detolf which can only be one direction and is a wonderful length but is not the best width for a larger hamster.Even if a Detolf was expanded it would be hard to fit,but with bins you don't have that same issue!

Re: from bar to bin
My thoughts exactly!
However the only real issue is that mesh/bar is pretty darn hard to get by or expensive as hell, since they're only sold in 50/100 meter rolls, over here. The cheap ones with small enough squares/holes/masks/spacing, for dwarf, are seasonal so I'd have to wait until autumn. :/
Good cage ventilation is important to me as my apartment is, as preciously stated, quite small. D:

Re: from bar to bin
Someone else might have a good idea of local places to get mesh in Sweden, but I'd think you should be able to find something from Amazon. If you absolutely have no other options and must go with one of the 50 or 100 meter rolls,a 50 meter roll could probably be used with more bins than most people would ever want or need!Though it could be used for extra projects as well, like making a rabbit run style playpen for hamsters(roofed run with wood and wire)or also be used for travel cages, carriers,or hamster(or even other pet)-proofing things like wire rabbit cages with larger bar spacing and general things like that.I think you'd have mesh for decades after though,so it is kind of annoying
