Default Imac fantasy - bar spacing

Hello,

Imac fantasy cages - is the bar spacing too big for a female adult robo?

cheers

It probably wouldn't be,but there are way better cages for robos that are very cheap and would hold a more appropriate amount of substrate along with being a bit larger

Cage Duna Multy
Alaska Hamster Cage | Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!

Another alternative would be making a bin cage. This would be fairly similar in cost, but you could make several bin cages instead of only paying for one cage.

Bar spacing would be fine. They do like floor space to get up some speed and love lots of hidy places.

Would love to see your cage set up when you decide which one you are using. I have a robo in the alaska and one in the grosvenor large rat and hamster cage which I love.

thanks for the responses. Feel a bit reluctant to try it to see as the consequence is a lost hamster, but I think you're right in that it would be ok.

I don't agree on the better cages (really not a fan of the alaska, or bin cages, and I did get the Duna Multy, but going to send it back - really don't like it). I might write a post about why I feel this way and why I do feel imac's are one of the better cages, could generate a bit of interesting discussion - but appreciate with regards to this post, I asked a question and you're trying to help and I do appreciate that, so doesn't feel right to start wading in here with my views

I'm not an avid forum poster anymore, but long term keeper of hamsters and have had just about every cage possible, haha!

I had Imacs for my Syrians I do like them but I just got a dwarf and didn't personally feel it would be ok for her (my Syrians chewed up the rubber clips and the ends of the tubes) so I got an Alaska which I love! But can always add mesh onto the bars to help secure it better if you decide to go with the iMac for your robo.
Might be quite good for a robo! But gosh the cleaning is a pain especially when you have a lot of levels and you're having to keep getting in there to clean up the pee LOL but good for space going upwards without being dangerous falling from height!

I would be interested to hear your comments about the alaska and the duna multy. I like the big doors on the alaska and the price. Didnt keep the plastic shelf or scary house though!

Have had hamsters in the multi duna maxi and loved it for access and nice set ups and not climbing and falling but seems a shame not to have fresh air such as you get with bar cages.

Would like cages to have white or silver bars. Just looks better imo.

I agree that the Imac Fantasy isn't a great cage for a Robo. The main issue being the base isn't deep enough to hold enough substrate. And dwarf hammies can be great tunnelers and diggers.

I'm guessing you like the idea of a barred cage. Personally I think the Savic Mickey 2XL is a brilliant cage for a Robo - it has 7mm bar spacing, a good deep base for substrate and a nice big front opening door, with a flat roof so you can hang things from the roof. It's also not too high (36cm internally like the maxi duna multy) - the downside being the price! It's about £79 now I think now.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Cages-Pen...vic+Mickey+2XL

I had it for our Syrian before I upgraded him - the metal barred shelf needs to come out but then it's easy to set up with floor toys and a shelf. It comes with some savic tubes for in cage, a sputnik, water bottle and food bowl - this is how it looked for our Syrian (big stuff obviously!) - see photo link below.

If you don't like the Duna Multy, have you seen the Kerry Terrarium? It's about the same size as the Duna Multy - slightly bigger due to having straight sides. The top bars are 7mm spacing so fine for a robo and there's a centre door that opens in the top bars as well, or the whole top just slides off. That's also £69.99 though. I think it's a great tank for a robo. You could have a really good depth of substrate in there. Or a detolf

Hamster Cages: great selection at zooplus: Small Pet Terrarium Kerry

I know the Imac Fantasy looks fun but it doesn't really have any advantages as a hamster cage! And it's not that cheap either.

I agree the Duna Multy can be a bit limited - there isn't a lot of space to modify it with a lot of variety of toys and enrichment. I think the maxi duna multy is good though (has 7mm bar spacing on top too) - it's taller so you can fit more substrate in and have plenty of space to make it fun and colourful with tubes and tunnels and hidey places, like the Imac Fantasy.

Cage Maxi Duna Multy

I like these set ups in the maxi duna multy for a robo One of them is the Zoozone 2 which is about the same dimensions and you can get that for about £45 but the top lid needs meshing.

And this is an amazing set up in a maxi duna A bit beyond my creative skills but shows what you can do with it

Obi's natural set up is complete!

This set up is fun and colourful and would be nice for a robo too (pic further down page)

Maxi Duna Multy Has Arrived!

I'm guessing you don't fancy a bin cage?

Another barred cage with 7mm bar spacing is one sold on Amazon.de - it works out about £55 to £60 including delivery. It's basically a lower Barney cage or a maxi duna multy with a barred top.

If you like the size of the standard duna multy but want a barred cage, I really liked the Skyline Ted - I got it as a holiday cage for our Syrian and it's really nice - not too big, not too small, has 7mm bar spacing and a good house built in. Access isn't great with just two small doors on top but I found it find for putting food and water in and the bar top is easy enough to just lift off.

Personally I think it's a bit on the small side for a robo, but it depends on the hamster.

There's also the Liberta Varazze cage. Front door and top door, 6 to 7mm bar spacing - and 70cm by 40cm - it's a bit taller than the others though so would need shelves and setting up to avoid fall risks (the one it comes with are a bit flimsy apparently)

Thanks everyone. I'm not a newbie hamster owner. I had a YouTube channel - squeakysmallpaws, mostly focused on guinea pigs and rats but there is a video review I did on hamster heaven. However, my now husband is chronically allergic to quite a few animals - it was mostly the rats but also the guinea pigs (allergy to the hay).

His allergies are so bad and we did everything - most expensive air purifiers, tried every substrate, separate room, antihistamines - you name we tried it - nothing worked. His allergies just got worse and worse. In the beginning he wasn't too bad, 2 years later and he couldn't be anywhere near them. We went to a specialist, paid privately to go and their advice was a flat out - you need to not have rats, it was beginning to cause lung damage and at 30 he had signs of copd, based on consistent asthma attacks.

In the end we spent close to £1000 modded out the shed outside - indoor flooring, damp proofing, heating - furniture for me to hang out in there and they were happy but even leaving a window open in the house while I cleaned them out a good 10 metres from the house triggered an asthma attack for hubby. We got through it by being super careful. We didn't rehome the rats, we made it work till the bitter end but after the last one passed we did not get anymore. Hugely sad for me as from my videos I think you'll see I totally adored them.

However, hamsters he's not allergic too! We currently have 5. 2 dwarfs, 1 Syrian, a Chinese and for the first time a robo. All are rescues. The robo is a delight. Rehome due to her 'aggression'....After a month she will now very calmly sit in our hands and eat treats! Not a bone of aggression, she's actually very calm with us but is skittish - slightest movement above her cage and she darts off, sometimes jumping in fright. She's in a taming cage - medium size savic tank but she's now due her upgrade, as we've earned her trust and she will quite happily come to us.

I have 2 iMac cages, a ferplast Mary, and a hamster heaven all in use. Personally found all my hamsters happiest in the iMac - although it's not without its flaws - all of which you've described.
I only tend to put the fallers and the skittish in it though. For the brave and competent climbers they get the hamster heaven style cage.

With Mini she doesn't like to be in open spaces. She prefers running in and out of hidies, choosing to be in something rather than climbing on top. This may change as her confidence does but she was an adult at the time of adoption so I don't expect huge changes.

Not specifically after a bargain cage, have no issue spending the money on the right cage for then but the Duna multy left me flat - again for reasons described - it's just a flat empty space.

Been looking at the Duna fun - will have a look at some of the other cages linked too.

The reason I wondered about the iMac is the nice enclosed element - she can't see above so I think it will make her less jumpy in her home overall. But open to suggestions.

Re the Alaska - I just think the overall quality is poor, bendy bars, gaps, bars not coated, it feels flimsy (unless its improved much since I came across one) but it does have its redeeming qualities - the price, ability to easily add shelves and depth for substrate.

Thanks xx

If set up well you could make any cage provide just as much cover as something like the iMac Fantasy, but with more actual floor space. This can be done very simple with a basic DIY platform, certain toys, hideouts, etc as you probably know.

Any cage is a blank slate, but considering the extra things you could do with a wire cage or even something like a Duna with a creative mind it is way better for providing space for dwarf species but still making sure they're not overwhelmed with open space.
