Question One question about cotton bedding.

Hello,

We are new members of this forum and we are new to this hamster world. We recently adopted a Winter White Dwarf and when we bought her bedding at the PetShop they told us to get Cotton-like bedding.
Now, we saw some videos and got some more information on the Web, and it seems to us that people do not like to use that type of bedding. We need some help, to know if we are putting our hamster in danger or not.
Thanks for the upcoming help.

Cotton and any other fabric is a serious risk to any animal's welfare. It can easily cause intestinal blockages, loss of nails or limbs, choking, etc. It should never be used under any circumstances due to how unsafe it is,but that is not limited to just the cotton fluff.Any sort of fabric item is a risk due to how much hamsters can chew

Take everything a pet shop says with a grain of salt. They're hardly ever that knowledgeable when it comes to pet care, and that is hardly their fault, though I've heard of some wonderful pet shop employees who actually know what they're talking about but those are quite rare. They're not there to educate you on proper care, they're salespeople at the end of the day,and nobody can blame them for that

Thank you a lot.
We believed them also because the product said it was right for hamsters.
They told us not to use regular cotton, but that that one was safer.
What do you recommend to use as bedding?

Hello- reading this I got a bit worried, I use this bedding from Pets at Home and my Winnie loves it. It seems very cosy. It's not fabric, but it's fluff-type stuff. Is that alright????

Kapok fiber is also unsafe.Just because it is a natural fiber or isn't fabric doesn't make it automatically safe, like a lot of people seem to have claimed

I would definitely remove it as soon as possible. There are so many risks associated with cotton/fluff bedding, it can get caught around teeth or limbs which could possibly cut off circulation, or can be swallowed and cause intestinal blockages. As amityville has advised, never trust pet store advice, their information is either outdated, or based on speculation/completely wrong. Tissue and toilet paper is very soft and insulation for hams, not only that but it's 100% safe and is very cheap. Cotton/fluff is extremely dangerous to their health so swap it for a paper based option. Best of luck

Oh dear! I am very lucky that none of my hamsters have suffered for it. I will remove it asap and exchange for paper! I hope Winnie isn't too disorientated/unsettled by that as I've only had her a couple of weeks. Thank you for your replies Really wish pet stores were more trustworthy.

Thank you a lot. We thought we could trust them because they told us that regular cotton was not good at all and the one they told us to buy said it was safe for hamsters... Seems that they were wrong too. We will remove it asap

Never trust what an employee says at a pet store. Cotton is VERY bad for hamsters.

All you need for nesting material is plain white toilet tissue, tear it into strips or smallish pieces & leave a pile for your ham to make a nest.
