Default Hamster getting trapped? Ikea detolf cage

Hi I have just bought a ikea detolf for my Russian dwarf hamster.

My dad seems to think my hamster Harvey could get trapped between the glass and the metal internal structure.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

I know a lot of people have Detolfs on here, and I've never heard of anyone say that they have such a problem. If you were concerned, you could try blocking any gap with aquarium sealant, but I'm really not sure it's necessary.

I've never heard of a dwarf hammy getting trapped between the bars and the glass. How big is the gap? Put it like this, a gap of 7mm is mouseproof and dwarf hamster proof and I doubt the gap is bigger than that The base will also have substrate in, so only the upper bar will be visible mostly. If you were worried though, you could wind/wrap sisal string round them which would fill the gap and be safe to chew.

Hi,

I don't know if this thread is still relevant, but the simplest solution is to just invert the bars when building the Detolf.

This prevents your dwarf from being able to squeeze inbetween the glass walls and the short bars.

The long, horizontal bars are nothing to worry about in the first place.

I guess I'm super late here, but I suppose it might help someone in the future.. But here's a video that explains it all. My hamster and the space between the glass and the grill.

Ah so a hamster can get behind the bars. I guess a Syrian could get stuck then. How big do you think the gap is?

Somewhere between 2.5-3 cm I guess. But in pretty sure a hamster would not attempt to through unless he/she is sure she can make it through. Gaby usually tests the gap before going all out. I've noticed this often especially when I'm holding her and she's walking from hand to hand. Sometimes she likes to squeeze through my fingers, but if she feels its too narrow, she usually turns around.
I mean, hamsters are pretty smart!

That does sound a bit unusual actually. I haven't seen a detolf myself, but on pictures the bars look to be right up to the glass, bar a few millimetres. And never heard of anyone mention it before.
