Default Bristol cage small gap

I have got a hold of a second hand Bristol cage, I have noticed a small gap on the ledge of the base where the bars meet, it looks manufactured so I was wondering is anyone could tell me what used to be in that gap to fill it up thanks in advance

Is that the place where the wheel goes? I tend to keep the wheel spindle in (in similar cages) but take the actual wheel off. Otherwise I block it with wooden pegs.
