Default Travel cages: How to get one, and when to use it?

Hi guys, I was just wondering when and what you use a travel cage for and if they stay in that cage while your gone or if it's just for transporting? *by when and what I mean how long of trips.

Travel cages are very different to each other, but this depends on what you need them for!

A quick trip for example 30 minutes or less(can also apply to small cage cleans as well)could be a very small carrier just large enough for your hamster to turn around in.These can be anything from a very small plastic "aquarium" carrier to a Critter Trail cage or similar,or even a pet store hamster cage which is not large enough to be used as a permanent cage.

For longer trips between 30 minutes and 1 hour, you could go with something between a Critter Trail and small bin cage in terms of size.

Anything that will require travelling for more than a day including vacation etc will require two things, one being a travel cage that is just large enough to fit the necessary things into and the other being a smaller travel cage for use during short drives within that time.A larger travel cage can be unsafe during car trips for a hamster to stay in,as they could go flying inside the cage or items in the cage could fly around and then injuries could occur.

Even for a long journey a ham is generally safest in a pet carrier rather than a cage or bin, if it is longer than an hour or so then you would need to check on the ham from time to time, in a carrier there is less chance of any accidents (from things like sudden braking) & the ham will mostly likely just get comfy & go to sleep.
If you're taking your ham away with you on a trip & staying over away from home then you would need some kind of holiday cage.

I also use a carrier for trips. Whether it's to go to the vet (less than 5 minutes away) or a hamster show (which means he's in there all day). I give him green pepper and cucumber for water (he doesn't like cucumber!) He will usually go to sleep. If I am going away and can't take him he goes to my friend. I take him in his carrier and she has a spare cage that he uses. I have not yet been away and taken him and this is unlikely to happen. But if you were taking your hamster you'd need some sort of cage. It would need to be able to fit the wheel in as well as toys and a hideaway to sleep in

Even on a long trip, it's generally considered safer for hamsters to be in a smaller space such as a carrier rather than anything larger and from my experience of travelling with hamsters, they usually go to sleep anyway so don't need a great deal in the way of toys.

The one frequently recommended is the: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/aladino-carrier which I don't know about the availability of in the USA but the link should at least give you an idea of dimensions.

A travel cage is more likely to be used if you're staying somewhere overnight with your hamster. I'd personally use things like Wilko Fish Tank 10L at wilko.com as my hamsters seem to feel more secure in smaller spaces but if I was going away for longer I might be looking at something a little larger. Depending on what cage your hamster has and what space you have in the car, you could use their own cage.

I have one dwarf hamster, so you may need something bigger if you have a Syrian.

For travelling (in a car) I also use this carrier, which is guinea pig sized. I find this easier to carry and more secure for the hamster. This would also be fine for a Syrian.

For a trip that's longer, like a few days to a week, I use this Pets At Home Cage (size guide if you're not in the UK) in the small size. I am able to fit all my crucial hamster accessories in as well. If you have a Syrian though, I would go for the medium or large size.

Finally, for even longer trips ranging from a week to a month, I use this cage, which is the same as the other link, only in the large size. This means I can fit all my hamster essentials, a bigger wheel, more bedding and more enrichment. I would definitely get a bigger cage for a Syrian though. If you could take your normal cage with, if it's not too heavy like a glass tank, that would be even better.

I bought carrier called Pet Shuttle from the UK and it's great. It looks a lot like Fluffagrams carrier. Mine is burgundy & white. It's made real well and works perfect for cage cleanings or going to the vet. I don't travel so I can't say about that

There is a Living World carrier which is fairly similar! Not sure of an exact link, but that is another good option for car rides and short trips

I have the Ferplast Aladino Guinea pig one linked above. It's nice - not too big, not too small. You can fit a couple of small houses in it and plenty of substrate.

I use it for:

1) Popping Charlie in when doing a cage clean. I then take it upstairs and put it on the bed with a blanket over it. If he's in the same room as the cage when I'm cleaning it he gets a bit frazzled wondering what I'm doing to his cage.
2) A trip to the vets.
3) When going on holiday. Our hammy doesn't go to sleep in his when we travel in the car - he sort of paces around a bit. The longest journey I've done is just under 2 hours.

It is just for transporting - or as a temporary play cage type thing while doing a clean. When we went on holiday we took a smaller cage with us. Still a good size cage but not as big as his regular cage. So yes they do need a cage setting up at the other end, ideally with same or similar layout as before and take some familiar smelling bedding and toys with you. If your main cage fits in the car, you could dismantle it, take all the contents in a plastic bag and reassemble it at the other end. Some cage have bars that fold flat and make good holiday cages.

As the others say, for travelling the hamster needs to be in a smaller space than a cage, so they can't get thrown or injured if you have to break hard. Also the pet carrier should be wedged in ideally so it can't move if you have to break hard (or so it doesn't fly across the car). I tend to put a fleece blanket over the pet carrier in the car too - so it's dark inside and he can't see all the scary things flashing past or flashes of sunlight.

Hammies don't travel that well generally, so if it's a long journey for a holiday it would probably best to get a pet sitter to come in or leave him with someone. If it's a one-off long journey - eg moving house, then maybe stopping every 2 or 3 hours might be an idea.
