Default A message from the Moderator Team

The moderator team would like to welcome all our new members to Hamster Central and we have put some information together to to help you. Existing members may find this useful too as it contains some things you may not be aware of when using the forum.

You will find the rules of the forum in stickies at the start of the thread boards. Please read these before posting and help us keep the forum a friendly and safe place. You may find answers to other queries in the FAQ section, which can be found at the top of the web page.

As a forum we do not have a recommended cage size and any sizes you see posted are the opinions of individual members. Every hamster is different and the size and set up of the cage should reflect their individual needs. Some hamsters thrive in a larger cage while others feel more secure in a more enclosed space. The National Hamster Council cites 1000cm2 of usable floor for a Syrian hamster and 800cm2 of usable floor space for dwarf species as the absolute minimum a hamster in any circumstances should be kept in but apart from that it depends on the needs of the particular hamster.

Hamsters should be able to run with a straight back in their wheel but as a forum we do not have recommended sizes or makes for different species of hamster. Similarly with bedding, there are many different types and brands available and you should use what suits you and your hamster best. Members reviews and recommendations are helpful in making a choice that suits you but we do not endorse one type over another.

As much as each hamster's requirements are different so too are our members. Not everyone has the same lifestyle or financial means. We all have different abilities and housing situations. Having lots of opinions and suggestions gives you the opportunity to work out a solution that works for you and your hamsters. As long as you are doing the best you can to ensure your pet is well provided for and you maintain good standards of welfare, please have confidence in your own choices and respect other members right to do the same.

Happy posting!
