litterbox training???
hey there! I'm sure some of you know from my previous post that I will be getting a pair of robo dwarf hamsters in a few weeks (I've done my research on pairs, I know what I'm getting into, what the risks are, etc.) I know several people like to use a litter tray in the corner of their hamster cage and they have successfully trained their hamster to go pee in it. I was wondering if litter training a pair of hamsters would be ok or if I should just stick to spot cleaning and if there are any tips on litter training besides the basics. Thanks!

Re: litterbox training???
If you have a sand bath they may well pee in that anyway (probably the wheel too!) but I don't think there would be any harm with a pair having another tray or even two with sand in, don't use the pellet stuff they sell for litter trays though most of it isn't safe to use.
Alternatively you can just wait until you know where they are peeing then put the tray/s there, if you put some of the damp substrate on top of the sand it can encourage them to use it.

Re: litterbox training???
ok thanks cypher! I was pretty sure using a litter tray would be fine but since I'm getting a pair different "rules" apply.
i know this isn't related to litter training but it is related to housing and i didn't want to start an entirely new thread. Have you ever used a little bit of hay in your hamster cage, and if so what is your opinion on it? If I used it would the hamsters eat a lot of it? I was thinking of buying a small bag of hay to make a small "sea grass" section in my ocean themed cage. I've seen Joy Georgina on youtube use hay but i wanted to get a few opinions on it. Thanks!

Re: litterbox training???
I do put a small amount of hay in my cages, some hams seem to enjoy having it others totally ignore it, most don't eat much, just a bit of a nibble maybe but they may take some into the nest.
You do need to go through hay & remove any sharp bits that could damage their pouches & it's best to freeze it for at least 48hrs, a week is better still, in case of any mites or other bugs that might be in it.

Thanks again Cypher I'll be sure to do as you suggested with the hay.

Re: litterbox training???
I'm definitely going to try potty training ours when we get him - it would make cleaning out a lot easier i think.
