Re: uk storage boxes?
I'm using a Really Useful Box - they're sturdy and smooth on the inside. They're not the cheapest around, but they last and are readily available from a number of different retailers e.g. Ryman

Re: uk storage boxes?
RUB boxes are by far the sturdiest boxes available & come in a variety of sizes, not the cheapest I agree but the best imo, much stronger than samla boxes & you can get them from various places online or in some shops.

Re: uk storage boxes?
I've tried both Wham and Really Useful Boxes for my bin cages and have found that although the RUB's are more expensive, they really are worth it as they're the sturdier and also have a nice flat lid which is easier to mesh.

Those would work In fact,if you connected two directly by removing walls you could even have one square meter cage for about the price of a cage half the size!

Re: uk storage boxes?
Size wise, I think it sounds absolutely fine to me. (If I put any of my hams in a square metre cage, I'd never see them again.) Don't know what those particular bins are like for sturdiness or ease of cutting though. I'll leave that to someone who's made a bin cage.
