Re: Adding on another bin
Could you cut the holes in the sides and mesh it like you did with the top one?

Re: Adding on another bin
Yeah plenty of meshed windows on the sides (or a couple really big ones) should provide plenty of ventilation. Let us know how this works out. I've been considering expanding my hamster's bin cage for a while, but expanding upwards just seems really daunting.

Re: Adding on another bin
Ok, I think I'll do it like the first, with ventilation holes on each of the long sides, and on the smaller sides.
Will do! I've been looking for a bigger bin for a while, because as I said Zero has been bar chewing. Also, would putting the bins side by side be better? Like would Zero use it more because it would be easier to get through? I could put them side by side and put in a big door, but would prefer to stack them. Whatever best for Zero tho!

Re: Adding on another bin
Personally I think side by side would be better as putting one on top would mean the tubes would be at an odd angle ... That's just my preference though If you did put them side by side then you can also mesh the top of the bigger one too!

Re: Adding on another bin
If you look at the third row down on these pictures, someone has connected two stacked bins with a shallow slope of tubing by having the tubes come out one side, round and across the front and in at the far side of the top bin. That might be a way of doing it so it isn't a very steep tube to get up. When hamsters get older these climbing issues can get tricky
I'd suggest having most things in the bottom larger bin - eg house, wheel, food and water and a tunnel and toy or two, with the top bin being an "extra" place to go with deep bedding and toys in. So the hamster doesn't have to use the tubes to get to something essential, but can do it just for fun - if you see what I mean. Although having an extra water bottle in the top bin might be a good idea too.

For ventilating the bottom bin, maybe have vent panels quite high up on all four sides so then you'd be able to have a good depth of bedding. Am assuming side by side would take up more space than you have
Did you know about the dollar a gallon sale on at the moment at Petco? Until 5 Nov I think. You could get a 40 gallon breeder tank for $40 and use the tubes as in tank toys

Re: Adding on another bin
Ok, I had thought about using the tube on the outside, but he problem remains that I couldn't get into the bottom bin very easily. I was going to cut a whole in the bottom of the top bin, and the lid of the bottom, and connect them. Then I would have a ramp, platform to get up. Would he use BOTH bins more if I put them side by side, and then cut out a big hole, mabye 4 inches wide on each bin and used the cut out panels to connect them? That way it would be a really big hole, e.g. more continous floor space.

Re: Adding on another bin
I think he would still see them as separate areas and that affects their behaviour a bit. I'm sure he will use both bins but best to have his main things together in the larger bin. On the other hand means you'd have space for a flying saucer maybe in the smaller bin and a wheel in the larger one, so it could be fun for him to go in the smaller bin. It's tricky when you have two levels as you lose some floor area in the top level if there's a hole big enough for a ramp - and have to protect the hole area for falls as well and to stop bedding falling through, but it's still somewhere to go and extra space.

Re: Adding on another bin
If it were continuous floor space it would be better,so definitely aim for that! You would end up with a cage over 775 square inches if you made the bins that way, which would be great for dwarf hamsters
You could remove a whole wall in a way of one bin which would be better than having a hole though.

Re: Adding on another bin
They can start blocking up the tubes to secure the main area when there's a tube between two areas. Have you got space to have them side by side? If so the Iris Christmas tree bins will be on sale I think and then you could have one larger area.
