If you absolutely have to use the bins, just connect them side by side but remove an entire wall from both.Don't use pvc pipes or stack them,as that isn't truly taking advantage of the bins together and just makes you have an extra room as stated before. It isn't going to be the easiest method to getting a larger cage, but it is the best way to actually expand a bin cage instead of just adding on an extra room which isn't anywhere near as beneficial.

What about the lid? I'm not going to be able to put them on if it's joined together. Does anyone have a pic?

You could make a lid with wood and mesh.

It depends on how you attach the lid to the bins.If you used zip ties and didn't cut them fully so you can untie them, they would be secure enough to not allow escape. If you didn't do anything at all,it could be lifted off if your hamster is strong enough.

Making a lid with wood and mesh is very simple, you just screw pieces of wood together and staple mesh on one side to the wood. You do have to be careful though and only use safe wood that is untreated in case it somehow gets gnawed(unlikely, but better safe than sorry!).

It may be better If they could be joined on the long side rather than joining the short ends together. If you cut a rectangle out of each bin but leave an edge/boarder. Then align the holes on each bin and using the edge/border to join the two bins together with bendable wire or nuts and bolts (and washers possibly).

Oh wait, sorry guys, just had a lightbulb go off. I will cut off one end of each bin straight, and then join them with zipties or something. CMB I do not have the room for that :/ so I will just attach them lengthwise. Thanks!

Would that be fine? One more question, what should I do with zero while joining them? I can prep the new bin, but at some point I will have to remove him from his old cage and take out his stuff so I can cut off the end and join it! I have siblings that could take care of him if I put him in a playpen... Also for the lid I will just cut them off at the same place as the bins and then join them togeher!
