Default 10 gallon tank?

Hi, I'm new to hamsters. What species could fit in a 10 gallon tank? Or is that entirely too small for even a Roborovski? I have read that hamsters need a lot of space. Also- if there are any mice owners on here- could a mouse fit in a 10 gallon tank? Thanks so much in advance!

In my opinion, it's too small even for a robo. It's only 240 square inches, which is smaller than the US minimum which even the US minimum isn't big enough. It would be okay for a single mouse, but bigger is better as long as you set up the cage with lots of things instead of lots of empty space and with tanks that just isn't easy to achieve.

It might even be smaller than that(220 square inches/20 x 10),but that isn't internal dimensions which would be slightly different due to the thickness of glass making the internal dimensions smaller.

I agree with Amity...I once had a couple 15 gal tanks for Russian dwarves but upgraded to 20 gal as I felt the 15 gal was too small.

Thanks. Maybe I'll do a mouse in a 10 gallon tank. Or find a bigger tank for a dwarf hamster

Tanks would end up being extremely bulky and heavy,so not a great cage solution.I actually once got a bruise trying to lift a 20 gallon tank, though it could've been my fault, but it still isn't something everyone will be capable of doing enough for regular cage maintenance.

A 10 gallon mouse tank would work, and then maybe a DIY dwarf hamster cage instead of a tank

10 imperial gallons is equivalent to about 45 litres (I think) which can be adequate for some hamsters depending on their needs.

Whilst the general consensus seems to be that hamsters will need larger than this to be happy, I have come across hamsters that seem happier in cages of this size and have struggled to settle in anything larger. Two of my own Chinese have had to be downgraded after having difficulty settling in larger cages but yet I've had one that needed a larger cage and unfortunately there's no way of saying what your hamster will prefer until you've got to know them a little bit.

I just gave away my 20 gal tank & hurt my back, well my back was already hurt but taking that cage out didn't help

.Found out that you can leave the tank on the table, waist level or there about, and use a dust pan &:vacuum cleaner. Then wipe it clean & then you don't have to move it

You could try a DIY cage with a glass front - much lighter and totally customisable! There's the IKEA Billy Extension Cage (there's plenty of tutorials on expanding it by ErinsAnimals) and recently this by VanillaHamHam (on YouTube) or just Vanilla on here. It's another IKEA cage hack.

10 gallons sounds a bit small, but like Fluffagrams said, it might work, it might not.

I think it is too small for any hamster. Robos need 415 square inches, Syrians need 500(Ireland minimum)
A single male mouse could live in it. You'd need a cover though. As for females they need 360 square inches for a pair. So really all you could use that tank for is 1 male mouse.
I am very experienced in mouse care if you would like advice on them.
You will need a mesh cover for your Aquarium if you plan to use it for an animal.
